JSW Motors is accelerating its entry into the Indian passenger vehicle market with two new SUVs that have recently been spotted undergoing testing on Indian roads. The vehicles in question are the rugged Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid and the all-electric Jaecoo J5, both based on models from Chinese manufacturer Chery and its sub-brands. These test mules signal that the company is preparing to expand its portfolio with a mix of hybrid and pure-electric options aimed at different segments of the growing SUV market.
The Jetour T2 stands out as a boxy, adventure-oriented plug-in hybrid SUV designed for those seeking capability and long-range flexibility. It combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with electric motors and a 26.7 kWh battery pack. This setup delivers an electric-only range of around 100 km under certain testing cycles, while the claimed combined range extends up to approximately 1,200 km when the petrol engine and battery work together. All-wheel-drive or cross-wheel-drive configurations are available on global versions, enhancing its off-road credentials and positioning it as a more capable alternative in the mid-to-large SUV space. The vehicle’s rugged styling, high ground clearance, and hybrid efficiency make it a strong candidate for Indian buyers who want both urban practicality and occasional highway or light-trail ability without frequent refuelling or recharging stops.
Alongside it, the Jaecoo J5 has been observed in camouflaged form, confirming JSW’s plans for a pure-electric mid-size SUV. This model is equipped with a 60.9 kWh battery pack paired with a single electric motor producing about 210 hp. It claims a range of roughly 461 km on the NEDC cycle, placing it squarely in competition with popular electric rivals such as the Hyundai Creta Electric. The J5 features a modern, boxy design with a closed-off grille, slim lighting elements, and a focus on everyday usability. Fast-charging support and a practical five-seat layout further strengthen its appeal for city and intercity driving. Reports indicate it will likely be assembled locally at JSW’s upcoming facility, helping keep costs competitive in the mid-size electric SUV segment.
Both vehicles form part of JSW Motors’ strategy to introduce new-energy vehicles under its own brand through partnerships with Chery Group companies. The Jetour T2 is expected to arrive first as a higher-positioned offering, while the Jaecoo J5 targets the volume-oriented electric SUV space. Testing activity near Pune and other locations suggests homologation and development work is progressing, with launches anticipated in phases over the coming period. Exact pricing, final Indian specifications, and feature lists will be confirmed closer to official unveiling, but the combination of a long-range PHEV and a competitive pure-electric SUV gives JSW Motors a diverse entry into a highly competitive market.
These sightings underline JSW’s intent to offer distinct choices for Indian buyers—one prioritising hybrid versatility and ruggedness, the other focusing on zero-emission practicality and range. As development continues, more details on local adaptations, safety features, and availability are expected to emerge, marking a significant step for the brand’s independent presence in India’s automotive landscape.
