JSW MG’s New Hybrid-Electric SUV Set to Challenge Mahindra’s Dominance

JSW MG Motor India is making a significant push into India’s evolving automotive landscape with the introduction of a new large SUV, set to arrive in both pure electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) forms. This development was confirmed on the sidelines of the recent reveal of the MG Majestor, the brand’s flagship D+ segment SUV.

The upcoming model, internally codenamed 520, represents JSW MG’s bold entry into the plug-in hybrid segment—a space yet to be explored by any mass-market carmaker in India. No other mainstream brand has offered an accessible PHEV option, making this a pioneering move aimed at bridging the gap between conventional ICE vehicles and full EVs.

The new SUV is expected to launch by October 2026, with the PHEV variant positioned to directly rival models like the Mahindra XUV 7XO (a popular mid-size SUV with strong hybrid-like efficiency claims in its segment). Meanwhile, the EV version will compete against emerging electric contenders such as the Mahindra XEV 9S, a seven-seater born-electric SUV that emphasizes family practicality and range.

The PHEV version draws from advanced technology, featuring a combination of a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a substantial 20.5 kWh battery pack. This setup promises impressive electric-only driving range for daily commutes, combined with the extended capability of the petrol engine for longer trips—addressing common range anxiety concerns in India’s diverse driving conditions. The EV variant will likely leverage a similar architecture but focus solely on battery-electric propulsion, offering competitive range and performance tailored to urban and highway use.

Both the EV and PHEV iterations are anticipated to be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 (also known as Xingguang 560), a mid-size crossover SUV recently launched in China by SAIC-GM-Wuling. This model features a rugged, boxy design with practical family-oriented packaging, measuring around 4.7 meters in length for generous interior space. The Indian adaptation will ride on a flexible multi-energy platform (referred to in some reports as the F150 or similar), allowing seamless integration of ICE, hybrid, and electric powertrains. This approach enables JSW MG to offer variants that cater to different buyer preferences while maintaining shared design and cost efficiencies.

Exterior styling is expected to blend modern SUV cues—such as a bold front grille, sleek LED lighting, and muscular proportions—with MG’s signature elements for a premium yet approachable look. The interior should emphasize comfort, technology, and spaciousness, potentially including features like large touchscreen infotainment, advanced connectivity, and versatile seating.

This launch forms part of JSW MG Motor India’s broader 2026 product offensive, which includes the recently unveiled Majestor (a Fortuner rival) and several other new-energy vehicles. The company aims to expand its portfolio aggressively in the high-volume mid-size SUV segment, where demand for electrified options is growing rapidly amid rising fuel costs and environmental awareness.

By targeting rivals like the Mahindra XUV 7XO (for the PHEV) and XEV 9S (for the EV), JSW MG positions the codenamed 520 as a value-driven challenger—potentially offering higher-segment space and features at more accessible price points. As details on exact specifications, pricing, and final design continue to emerge closer to launch, this new SUV could play a key role in accelerating PHEV adoption in India while strengthening JSW MG’s foothold in the competitive EV and hybrid markets.
