JSW MG is making a strong push into the premium electric segment with the IM5, a sleek, high-tech electric sedan that promises exceptional range, rapid performance, and advanced features — all at a relatively accessible price point.
The standout highlight of the JSW MG IM5 is its impressive range of up to 860 km (claimed in certain test cycles, with real-world expectations around 700–760 km). This is made possible by a huge 100 kWh battery pack housed in a vehicle that stretches nearly 5 metres in length (approximately 4,931 mm). Despite its size, the IM5 delivers strong performance with 500 Nm of torque and a 0–100 km/h sprint in less than 4.9 seconds in the Long Range rear-wheel-drive variant.
This positions the IM5 as a serious contender in the premium EV space, offering a compelling blend of luxury, technology, and practicality.
“IM” stands for Intelligent Mobility, MG’s premium sub-brand focused on advanced electric vehicles. The IM5 is part of this new lineup, sitting alongside the IM6 (an SUV that has already generated buzz at auto expos). While the IM5 feels more premium and sedan-like, it remains surprisingly approachable in terms of pricing for the level of features and performance it offers.
Step up to the front, and the IM5 impresses with its distinctive LED DRLs and projector headlamps that give it a premium, high-performance look. It features six parking sensors at the front, a well-integrated 360-degree camera, and advanced ADAS radar sensors on top. The ADAS suite goes well beyond basic Level 2 systems commonly seen in India, thanks to fast-processing chipsets and responsive technology.
The side profile is equally striking, with stylish 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 245/40 R20 tyres, large disc brakes with sporty calipers, and a sleek dual-tone design. Flush, frameless doors with hidden handles add to the modern, aerodynamic appeal. At the rear, you’ll find a diffuser-style bumper, LED taillights, and a power tailgate that reveals a spacious boot with practical features like a 12V socket and 60:40 split-folding rear seats.
One clever touch is the four-wheel steering system, which helps this nearly 5-metre-long sedan achieve a surprisingly tight turning radius of around 5 metres (or under 10 metres overall). This makes manoeuvring in tight spaces far easier than you’d expect from such a large car.
Even with its massive battery, the IM5 supports ultra-fast charging. It can reach 80% charge in just 18 minutes using a DC fast charger. The car is compatible with both AC and DC charging, making it convenient for daily use and long trips alike.
Inside, the IM5 offers a minimalist yet premium cabin. Highlights include:
- A massive 26-inch touchscreen that integrates infotainment, navigation, and vehicle controls.
- A premium 20-speaker audio system with 7.1 surround sound for an immersive experience.
- Ventilated and heated front seats with electric adjustments and good lumbar support.
- Soft-touch materials, leatherette upholstery, wooden finishes, and ambient lighting.
- Wireless charging, ample storage, and thoughtful details like auto-dimming mirrors and a large panoramic glass roof (fixed, not panoramic opening).
The driving position feels sporty and low-slung, enhancing the engaging feel behind the wheel. Rear passengers get decent space, though the raised battery floor means under-thigh support isn’t class-leading. Visibility is good, and the overall build quality feels premium.Advanced driver aids include multiple cameras, fast-response ADAS, and features that make daily driving safer and more convenient. The IM5 also supports intelligent connectivity features for a seamless experience.
With 500 Nm of instant torque (higher in Performance variants), the IM5 feels quick and responsive. The combination of strong acceleration, four-wheel steering for better handling, and a composed ride makes it enjoyable on both highways and twisty roads.
Real-world range should comfortably sit in the 700–760 km bracket depending on driving style, weather, and load — impressive for a car of this size and performance level.
MG is planning to bring the IM series to India, with the IM6 SUV expected to launch first in 2026 via the premium MG Select channel. The IM5 is also part of the roadmap and should follow, offering strong competition to models like the Kia EV6 and other premium electric sedans.Pricing is expected to be competitive for the segment — likely in the ₹40–50 lakh range (ex-showroom, estimated), making it an attractive option for buyers seeking luxury features without ultra-premium costs.
Pros and ConsStrengths:
- Class-leading claimed range with a large 100 kWh battery
- Quick acceleration and engaging drive thanks to four-wheel steering
- Fast 18-minute DC charging
- Loaded with advanced tech, cameras, and a premium 20-speaker sound system
- Modern, premium design with frameless doors
Areas to Improve:
- Rear seat under-thigh support could be better due to the battery floor
- Some buyers might prefer ventilated rear seats in this price bracket
- As a large sedan, boot space is good but not class-leading when seats are folded
Overall, the MG IM5 stands out as an intelligent, feature-packed electric sedan that combines massive range, strong performance, and premium technology in one impressive package. It’s a bold step for MG’s IM sub-brand and could shake up the premium EV market when it arrives.
