JSW Motors is preparing to make a strong entry into India’s premium SUV segment with its first product — the Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The rugged, boxy SUV is expected to hit showrooms just before Diwali 2026 (likely October 2026), and it is already being positioned as a serious threat to the long-dominant Toyota Fortuner.
Backed by JSW Group’s partnership with Chinese automaker Chery (under the Jetour brand), the T2 brings a compelling mix of bold design, advanced hybrid technology, impressive electric-only range, and what could be highly competitive pricing.
The India-spec Jetour T2 will come with the i-DM plug-in hybrid system. It combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with dual electric motors and a 26.7 kWh LFP battery pack.
- Electric-only range: Up to 139 km (NEDC certified) — enough for most daily commutes without using a drop of petrol.
- Combined range: Over 1,000 km on a full tank and charged battery.
- Performance: In its more powerful AWD configuration, the system is capable of delivering around 381 hp and a massive 610 Nm of torque. Even the standard dual-motor setup promises strong performance with 221 hp and 390 Nm.
Power is managed through a smooth 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which is claimed to offer better efficiency and response than conventional hybrid systems.
The Jetour T2 features a tough, upright boxy silhouette that draws comparisons with the Land Rover Defender. It offers a spacious cabin, generous boot space (around 580 litres), and premium interiors expected to include a large 15.6-inch touchscreen, connected features, and modern comfort equipment. With intelligent 2WD/4WD switching, the T2 is designed to handle both highway cruising and light off-road duties — making it a versatile lifestyle SUV.
While official prices are yet to be announced, early estimates place the JSW Jetour T2 in the ₹30–40 lakh (ex-showroom) range, with some reports suggesting it could start closer to ₹35–38 lakh. If JSW manages to price it aggressively (potentially undercutting the Fortuner’s top variants), the T2 could disrupt the segment significantly. The Toyota Fortuner, which relies purely on diesel power, currently enjoys strong brand loyalty but lacks the hybrid efficiency, tax benefits, and zero-emission urban driving capability that the Jetour T2 offers.
The Fortuner has ruled the body-on-frame ladder-frame SUV space for years. However, the arrival of the Jetour T2 — along with other upcoming rivals like the MG Majestor — signals a shift. Buyers are increasingly looking for:
- Better fuel efficiency
- Lower running costs
- Modern features
- Hybrid/EV-like benefits without full electric range anxiety
The Jetour T2’s ability to run 139 km on electricity alone, combined with its long total range, could make it particularly attractive to fleet buyers, high-mileage users, and environmentally conscious customers in metros.
Local assembly at JSW’s new facility in Maharashtra is expected to help keep costs competitive and improve localisation over time.
JSW Motors has already filed patents for the T2’s design and powertrain in India. More details on exact variants, features, safety equipment (including ADAS), and final pricing are likely to emerge in the coming months.
If the company delivers on its promise of strong performance, premium feel, and value-for-money pricing, the JSW Jetour T2 could become one of the most talked-about launches of 2026 — and finally give the Toyota Fortuner some serious competition after years of dominance.
