JSW Gears Up for India Entry with Chery-Based EV and Hybrid Models

JSW Group, a prominent Indian conglomerate traditionally known for its steel, energy, and infrastructure businesses, has recently ventured into the automotive sector with an ambitious push into electric and hybrid vehicles. In a significant development, JSW has forged a strategic partnership with Chinese automaker Chery Automobile. This collaboration allows JSW to leverage Chery’s advanced technology and vehicle platforms to introduce models under its own independent brand in India, separate from its existing joint venture with MG Motor India.

The tie-up was formalized to support JSW’s entry as a standalone car manufacturer, with plans to rebadge or rename select Chery models for the Indian market. This approach enables quicker market entry while adapting vehicles to local preferences, regulations, and pricing expectations. JSW aims to establish a dedicated manufacturing facility in Maharashtra, with production slated to ramp up soon.

As part of this strategy, JSW has confirmed two initial models for launch in India:

  • The first is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV, widely expected to be based on the Jetour T2 (from Chery’s Jetour sub-brand). This rugged, boxy SUV is anticipated to arrive around Diwali 2026 (late 2026), featuring a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine combined with electric motors, a substantial battery pack for notable electric-only range, and options for front- or all-wheel drive. It targets buyers seeking versatility for both urban commutes and longer journeys, with premium features like large infotainment screens, ADAS, and off-road capabilities.
  • The second confirmed model is an all-electric vehicle (EV), based on the Chery iCar V23. This compact electric SUV, known for its distinctive square-box retro-modern design, tough stance, and off-road-inspired looks, is positioned as JSW’s inaugural pure EV offering. Launch is expected in early 2027.

The Chery iCar V23 stands out in the global market with dimensions around 4,220 mm in length, a 2,730 mm wheelbase, and available rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations delivering up to around 211 hp in higher variants. It boasts a claimed range of up to 510 km (CLTC standard in China), making it competitive in the affordable-to-mid-range EV segment. In India, the rebadged version—likely carrying JSW branding—has already been spotted testing in camouflaged form, including at facilities like ARAI, indicating active localization efforts.

A recent video provides an up-close look at what appears to be the iCar V23 (or its JSW-adapted prototype), highlighting its bold exterior styling with vertical LED elements, squared-off proportions, and a rugged yet futuristic appeal. The design evokes a modern take on classic off-roaders, potentially positioning it as a rival to models like the Mahindra Thar EV in aesthetics and capability, while offering zero-emission driving.

This move underscores JSW’s broader ambition to capture a slice of India’s rapidly growing EV and hybrid market, driven by government incentives, rising environmental awareness, and demand for sustainable mobility. By partnering with Chery—a major player with expertise in new-energy vehicles—JSW aims to deliver competitive, tech-rich products at accessible price points, possibly starting under Rs 20 lakh for the EV variant.

As production begins and more details emerge, these launches could reshape the competitive landscape, bringing fresh options to Indian buyers in the evolving era of electrification. Stay tuned for official unveilings and pricing announcements in the coming months.
