In a significant development for India’s growing new energy vehicle (NEV) segment, the Chery Jaecoo J7 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the very first time. The undisguised prototype sighting has sparked strong speculation that the premium mid-size SUV could soon arrive in the country through JSW Motors, as part of the Indian conglomerate’s deepening partnership with Chinese giant Chery.
This marks an exciting milestone, as JSW Motors is gearing up to enter the passenger vehicle market with a strong focus on electrified SUVs. While the company has already been linked to models like the Jaecoo J5 (in EV form), Jetour T2 PHEV, and iCar V23 EV, the appearance of the J7 PHEV suggests an even more powerful and efficient offering could be on the horizon.
Unlike conventional SUVs, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a potent electric motor and an 18.3 kWh battery pack. Together, they deliver a system output of approximately 347 hp (255 kW) and a massive 525 Nm of torque — figures that put it in a league above many rivals in terms of outright performance.Key highlights include:
- Pure electric range: Up to 90–100+ km (depending on test cycle), making it suitable for daily city commutes without burning a drop of fuel.
- Total driving range: Over 1,200 km on a full tank and charged battery — ideal for long highway journeys with minimal range anxiety.
- Fast charging support: Both AC and DC charging capability, a relatively rare feature in this segment.
- Efficient hybrid mode: Claimed fuel efficiency as low as 4.9–5.9 L/100 km when the battery is depleted.
The powertrain uses a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and is configured in a front-wheel-drive layout. This setup promises strong acceleration, smooth power delivery, and lower running costs compared to traditional petrol or diesel SUVs.
The Jaecoo J7 features a bold, modern SUV stance with premium styling cues that blend rugged appeal with urban sophistication. It sits in the mid-size SUV category, potentially rivaling vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, or even higher-spec Creta and Seltos variants — but with the added advantage of plug-in hybrid technology.
If launched in India under the JSW umbrella (likely with rebadging or co-branding), it could be positioned as a premium yet accessible electrified option. Industry watchers believe it may follow a CBU (completely built-up) import route initially, similar to JSW’s reported plans for its first high-performance PHEV model.
JSW Motors, backed by the steel-to-energy giant JSW Group, is adopting an aggressive NEV-first strategy for its India entry. The partnership with Chery allows quick access to advanced platforms, hybrid tech, and global designs without starting from scratch.
