Is MG’s Next Big SUV a 5-Seater PHEV? SAIC’s Latest India Patent Hints at Second Plug-in Hybrid for India

JSW MG Motor India, riding the momentum of its Windsor EV and the impending launch of the Wuling Starlight-based plug-in hybrid SUV, may be preparing to introduce another electrified SUV in the Indian market. Recent patent filings and global market models point to a 5-seater SUV that’s available with both pure electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants internationally — and could soon make its way to India under the MG badge.

SAIC Patents Strategic SUV in India

SAIC Motor — MG’s parent company and one of China’s biggest automakers — has filed a patent in India for a new SUV that, in overseas markets, is sold in both pure EV and PHEV forms. The design and mechanical details in the patent closely match the Baojun Yunhai, a crossover SUV developed by the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture.

What makes this notable for India is that the patented version includes a fuel filler cap on both sides, a tell-tale sign that the model is a plug-in hybrid rather than a full electric vehicle — confirming that SAIC is protecting the technology locally ahead of a possible product launch

What Is the Baojun Yunhai?

In its home markets, the Baojun Yunhai SUV is offered with:

  • Pure EV powertrains — with claimed driving ranges of up to 500-600 km depending on battery size.
  • Plug-in Hybrid powertrain — pairing a 1.5 litre petrol engine with an electric motor, offering different battery pack sizes with electric ranges up to 140 km (CLTC).
  • Outputs vary, but the electrical system produces around 201 bhp in many trims.

Internationally, the Yunhai showcases a modern design, large infotainment screens, premium interiors, and a tech-heavy package — qualities that could suit Indian tastes, especially as electrified SUVs gain traction.

Could This Be MG’s Second Plug-in Hybrid in India?

MG India’s first confirmed PHEV project is the Starlight SUV based on the Wuling Starlight 560, expected to launch later in 2026 with both PHEV and EV options. That model, internally codenamed 520, will be offered as a plug-in hybrid as well as a battery-electric version, marking MG’s first mass-market PHEV SUV in India.

The newly patented SUV — likely linked to the Baojun Yunhai design — could be another MG-badged model that leverages SAIC’s global platforms. The fact that SAIC has specifically protected its intellectual property for this SUV in India strongly indicates an intention to introduce yet another electrified product here, possibly positioned below or alongside the 520 SUV in terms of size, pricing, and market segment.

What This Could Mean for MG’s India Lineup

If launched, this second SUV would broaden MG India’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) portfolio in several ways:

  1. Fills More Price/Size Brackets
A 5-seater plug-in hybrid offering — potentially a bit smaller or more accessible than the 520 model — could help MG compete more directly with mid-size SUVs from other brands that are transitioning to electrified formats.
  2. EV + Hybrid Choice
Having both pure EV and PHEV versions of the same model gives consumers flexibility — catering to buyers who want zero-emissions driving and those who prefer hybrid-assisted range and convenience.
  3. Tech & Features
The international variant’s focus on tech — including large displays, premium interior touches, and modern design — will align with what Indian customers increasingly expect, especially in the EV-centric segments.

Is This Confirmed? Not Yet — But the Clues Are Strong

JSW MG Motor India has not officially confirmed a launch plan for this specific SUV yet. However, SAIC’s patent filing, aligned with MG’s broader electrification strategy (including regular additions to its EV and hybrid lineup), suggests that MG is laying the groundwork for a second plug-in hybrid SUV in India.

In a market where EV infrastructure is still building out and buyers are looking for a range of powertrain options, this kind of dual-powertrain strategy could help MG carve out a stronger position — especially against rivals from Tata, Mahindra and Hyundai that are also expanding into electrified segments.
