Hyundai Motor Company’s IONIQ 5 has cemented its position as the brand’s best-selling electric vehicle worldwide, with cumulative global sales exceeding 400,000 units since its launch in 2021. The milestone underscores the crossover’s strong appeal and Hyundai’s growing success in the electric vehicle market.
By early 2025, the IONIQ 5 (including the high-performance IONIQ 5 N variant) had already accounted for the large majority of sales in Hyundai’s IONIQ series, which itself surpassed 500,000 units overall. The IONIQ 5 has consistently driven the bulk of those volumes, making it the clear volume leader among Hyundai’s dedicated EVs.
Hyundai’s expanding electric lineup now includes the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, IONIQ 9, Kona Electric, Inster (marketed as the Casper Electric in some regions), and STARIA Electric. Within this range, the IONIQ 5 stands out for its combination of distinctive retro-futuristic design, spacious interior, competitive range, and ultra-fast 800-volt charging capability enabled by the E-GMP platform.
Since its debut, the IONIQ 5 has earned widespread recognition for practicality and technology. It offers a versatile five-passenger cabin with a flat floor, ample cargo space, and features such as vehicle-to-load (V2L) power sharing. Updated versions and local production in key markets, including the United States at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia, have further supported demand.
In major markets such as the United States, the IONIQ 5 has frequently ranked among the top non-Tesla EVs, posting solid year-over-year gains in periods when overall EV demand faced headwinds from changing incentives and market conditions. Its strong performance has helped elevate Hyundai’s broader electrified vehicle share, which includes both battery-electric and hybrid models.
The achievement of more than 400,000 global sales highlights the IONIQ 5’s role as the cornerstone of Hyundai’s electric strategy. As the company continues to expand its EV offerings with models like the three-row IONIQ 9 and more accessible options such as the Inster, the IONIQ 5 remains the benchmark for volume and customer acceptance within the lineup.
Hyundai’s progress with the IONIQ 5 demonstrates how focused product development, platform technology, and market-specific adaptations can drive sustained EV adoption. With over 400,000 units delivered, the model has not only become the company’s best-selling EV but also a significant contributor to Hyundai’s position in the global transition to electrified mobility.
