Hyundai is all set to roll out a new sub-4m electric SUV in India from January 2027. The new model forms a part of the 26 new cars the carmaker plans to launch in India by 2030, as it eyes to intensify its focus on the electric vehicle segment and offer diverse electrified options, from entry-level EVs to luxury cars, across all vehicle segments.
Based on the spy images, the new electric SUV is expected to have a completely different design language as compared to the current crop of Hyundai cars in India. The new design is said to be more ‘sharp’ and ‘different’ and not use some of the design elements that have been used on the current cars. The design is anticipated to create a different image of the brand in the minds of the Indian consumers.
The new electric SUV will be highly localised as Hyundai looks to utilise the local supply chain and cut costs for improved value. With the Indian government encouraging localization, Hyundai can benefit from reduced import duties on the components and also utilise government incentives on local R&D, apart from reducing costs due to a shorter supply chain. The new model will also make its entry in India’s competitive EV market, targeting the mainstream buyers.
Industry sources suggest that the new electric SUV could use powertrains from the upcoming Syros EV. By sharing powertrains, Hyundai is expected to reduce development costs and time while providing a similar or comparable range to its Syros EV. It will enable the carmaker to offer entry-level EVs with sufficient range and power, which will be crucial for the penetration of electric cars in the Indian market. With a sub-4m length, the new model will also provide more comfort and convenience over a regular hatchback.
With its aggressive EV plans, including the localization of components, reduced cost, and diverse product portfolio, Hyundai is poised to intensify the competition in the Indian EV market, offering more choice to Indian consumers.
