Hyundai is gearing up for a strong hybrid offensive in the Indian SUV market. With rising fuel prices and growing demand for better mileage without sacrificing performance, the Korean automaker is planning to introduce multiple hybrid SUVs in the coming years. These models promise impressive city efficiency (often in the 20–30 kmpl range for lighter hybrids), strong torque assist from the electric motor, and a host of modern features.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Hyundai hybrid SUVs expected to launch from 2027 onwards.
1. Next-Generation Hyundai Creta Hybrid (2027) – The Most Awaited One
The current Creta is one of India’s best-selling SUVs, and its next-generation model (expected in early to mid-2027) will bring a complete makeover. This won’t be a simple hybrid add-on to the existing car — it will be a fresh third-generation Creta with updated exterior design, a more premium and tech-loaded interior, and significantly improved features.Key Highlights:
- Powertrain: A strong (full) hybrid system based on the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine combined with an electric motor and battery pack. This is not a mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid — you won’t need to plug it in, but it will deliver excellent efficiency through regenerative braking and electric assist.
- Expected Mileage: In city driving, similar to rivals like the Grand Vitara or Hyryder — around 25–30 kmpl is realistic depending on driving style. Highway mileage may be slightly lower, which is typical for strong hybrids.
- Other Benefits: Better low-end torque assist for smoother city driving and overtaking, lower emissions, and refined performance.
- Features: Expect a new benchmark in the segment with advanced ADAS, larger curved displays, 360° camera, powered tailgate, and several segment-first innovations that Hyundai is reportedly working on.
The Creta Hybrid will directly compete with the upcoming Kia Seltos Hybrid and existing strong hybrids in the mid-size SUV space. Many believe this could become Hyundai’s highest-volume hybrid model in India due to its perfect balance of size, features, and efficiency.
2. Hyundai Ni1i – All-New 7-Seater / 3-Row Hybrid SUV
Hyundai is developing a brand-new three-row SUV internally codenamed Ni1i. This model will sit above the Alcazar but below the Tucson in the lineup, offering more space than the current Alcazar while remaining more accessible than full-size premium SUVs.Key Highlights:
- Seating: Proper 7-seater configuration with usable third-row space for adults on shorter trips.
- Powertrain: Expected to use a strong hybrid system, likely the same or similar 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid setup as the new Creta (some reports also mention possible 1.6L hybrid influences). This will provide good city mileage — expect 20–27 kmpl in real-world mixed conditions, plus electric torque assist.
- Positioning: It will rival models like the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and Kia Carens/Sorento variants. The extra space makes it ideal for large Indian families who want comfort and practicality.
- Features: As a slightly more premium offering, it should come loaded with high-end equipment, good ride quality, and family-friendly touches.
Production is expected to start at Hyundai’s new Talegaon facility, with launch likely in late 2027 or 2028. This could be a strong contender if priced competitively.
3. Hyundai Palisade Hybrid – The Flagship Premium SUV
At the top end, Hyundai is seriously considering bringing the Palisade to India, potentially in hybrid form. This large, boxy, and luxurious SUV is already popular in global markets (especially the US and Middle East) for its spacious cabin, premium feel, and commanding road presence.Key Highlights:
- Powertrain: The India-spec version is expected to feature a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system. Combined output is around 329–334 hp and 460 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic. It offers both FWD and AWD options in global models.
- Efficiency: Claimed mileage is around 14.1 kmpl (combined), which is impressive for a vehicle of this size and power. Real-world city mileage could be better thanks to hybrid assistance, while highway runs remain strong.
- Seating & Space: Available in 7- or 8-seater configurations globally. It offers massive interior room, premium materials, captain seats, and excellent third-row comfort — making it feel like a “moving home.”
- Features: Expect a long list including advanced ADAS, panoramic sunroof, premium audio (like BOSE in some trims), ventilated/massaging seats, multiple screens, and high-end safety tech.
- Pricing & Positioning: Expected price range is roughly ₹40–60 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on localisation and variants. It will rival the Toyota Fortuner and other premium ladder-frame or unibody SUVs, but with a more car-like ride and hybrid efficiency.
Hyundai has ambitious plans — aiming to launch multiple new models by 2030, with hybrids forming a significant part of the strategy. These upcoming SUVs will combine:
- Strong real-world mileage (especially in city traffic)
- Electric motor torque for responsive driving
- Modern features and safety tech
- No range anxiety (unlike pure EVs)
Note that these are strong hybrids, not plug-in hybrids, so they’re simple to own and maintain — just like regular petrol cars but far more efficient.
Other updates like refreshed Verna, Exter, and possibly more electrified options are also in the pipeline, making 2027–2028 an exciting period for Hyundai buyers.
If you’re waiting for better mileage in an SUV without going fully electric, these hybrids could be game-changers. The Creta Hybrid seems like the sweetest spot for most buyers, while the Ni1i and Palisade will cater to those needing more space and presence.
