Hyundai is preparing to launch a new small electric vehicle that could shake up the competitive landscape of India affordable EV segment. Dubbed HE 1i internally for the moment, the car is expected to be launched by India in the late 2026 or early 2027. Taking on the established players, the model is set to challenge the likes of Tata Punch EV, Tata Nexon EV and the forthcoming Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, three models that currently dominate the discourse for buyers seeking practical and reasonably priced electric mobility.

At the heart of the HE1i lies Hyundai’s E-GMP (K) architecture which was developed with a focus on cost reductions and specific requirements of the Indian market. The architecture is set to underpin two variants – a standard range and a long range edition that is claimed to offer up to 450 kilometers on a single charge. The availability of two variants should help Hyundai cater to a wider cross-section of customers, ranging from first-time EV buyers that are focused on lower purchase price to those that are looking to make longer journeys without frequent charging stops.

Beyond the range figures, the HE1i is set to bring Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems as standard or near-standard equipment. Features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and automatic emergency braking would represent a significant leapfrog in a segment that currently has limited offerings of such technology. Inside, the car is set to bring Hyundai’s Pleos Connect system that brings a more connected and integrated digital experience with features such as advanced smartphone compatibility and cloud connectivity that would keep the car relevant even after purchase.

Design will also play an important role. With no official pictures yet, the HE1i is expected to follow Hyundai’s evolving electric design language. Clean body surfaces, distinctive lighting signatures and a youthful approach are some of the elements that are likely to shape the design of the car. The overall aim would be to create a feeling of modernity and premium without straying into the higher price brackets of larger electric SUVs.

Pricing remains the big unknown. With value for money being a key consideration in the Indian market, Hyundai will need to position the HE1i competitively against the Tata and Mahindra rivals. By delivering an attractive combination of design, range figures, features and technology at the right price, the HE1i could carve out a niche in the emerging compact EV segment. The final success will depend on how well Hyundai can balance this when the car launches.
