Hybrid SUVs to Lead Hyundai’s India Expansion as Affordable EV Nears Launch

Hyundai is preparing a major expansion of its powertrain portfolio in India, combining a strong push toward hybrid SUVs with the launch of an affordable electric vehicle aimed at the mass market.

Before the company’s larger and more premium EV plans take shape, Hyundai is expected to focus on the volume-driven segment. Reports indicate that the automaker could introduce a heavily localised compact electric SUV in India during 2026. By prioritising local sourcing and manufacturing, Hyundai is likely aiming to keep costs competitive and make the EV accessible to a wider set of buyers.

The upcoming compact EV is expected to take on popular entry-level electric models such as the Tata Punch EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, Citroen eC3 and MG Comet EV. This positioning would place Hyundai directly in the rapidly growing affordable EV segment, where demand is being driven by urban buyers looking for practical and budget-friendly electric mobility.

At the same time, Hyundai is also preparing a broader SUV expansion strategy centred on hybrid technology. With several new hybrid models reportedly under consideration for the Indian market, the company appears to be adopting a dual approach—leveraging hybrids to bridge the gap while the country’s EV ecosystem continues to mature.

By combining locally produced electric vehicles with hybrid-powered SUVs, Hyundai is aiming to strengthen its presence across multiple segments and respond to India’s evolving transition toward electrified mobility.
