High-Speed Charging Meets Long-Distance Travel: Fresh Bus & Exponent Energy Redefine Intercity EV Mobility

The landscape of intercity travel in India is set for a massive transformation. Fresh Bus, a leading electric intercity bus operator, has announced a strategic partnership with energy tech pioneer Exponent Energy to deploy a fleet of all-sleeper electric buses.

This collaboration introduces India’s first 15-minute rapid charging sleeper electric bus, a move aimed at solving the long-standing “range anxiety” associated with long-haul EV travel.High-Speed Charging Meets Long-Distance Travel

The core of this partnership is the integration of Exponent Energy’s 1.5 MW rapid charging technology. While traditional electric buses often require hours to recharge, this new fleet can reach a full charge in just 15 minutes.

Fresh Bus plans to deploy 250 electric buses in the initial phase. By utilizing the 1.5 MW charging infrastructure at highway pitstops every 300 km, these buses can efficiently cover routes of 1,000 km or more, matching the operational efficiency of traditional diesel buses without the carbon emissions.

Announced in January 2026 through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), this initiative positions Fresh Bus as India’s first and only intercity electric bus operator capable of running a 100% all-sleeper EV fleet on long-distance routes. The buses, featuring comfortable sleeper configurations, noise-free air-conditioned cabins, personal charging ports, and premium amenities like uniformed crew and real-time tracking, promise a flight-like experience for passengers.

Overcoming Traditional EV Limitations

Historically, intercity electric buses have been constrained by ranges of around 350 km and lengthy charging downtimes, making them less viable for overnight or extended journeys. This partnership changes that equation. Instead of relying on massive, expensive battery packs for extended range, the strategy focuses on strategic en-route rapid charging. A quick 15-minute top-up every 300 km enables “unlimited” effective range, faster fleet turnaround, higher utilization, and lower operational costs—potentially reducing expenses by up to 30% compared to diesel counterparts.

Operations will kick off on the high-demand Hyderabad–Bengaluru corridor, a key intercity route, with plans for pan-India expansion. This marks a significant step toward Fresh Bus’s ambitious goal of capturing 10% of India’s intercity bus market share by operating 10,000 EV buses nationwide.A Win for Sustainability and Passengers

By replacing diesel buses with zero-emission electric alternatives, the partnership delivers substantial environmental benefits, including reduced air pollution and lower greenhouse gas emissions along India’s highways. Passengers gain from quieter, smoother rides free of diesel fumes, combined with the convenience of rapid charging that minimizes delays.

Arun Vinayak, Founder & CEO of Exponent Energy, highlighted the breakthrough: “Rapid charging truly unlocks the opportunity to replace diesel buses with EVs on long-haul routes. A 15-minute quick charge every 300 km during highway pitstops allows for diesel vehicle-like operations with all the benefits of EVs to the fleet operator, the passengers, and the climate.” He emphasized that the entire 1.5 MW charging capability was developed in India, showcasing homegrown innovation.

Sudhakar Chirra, Founder & CEO of Fresh Bus, added that after two years of joint engineering with Exponent Energy, the companies are ready to scale deployment, redefining intercity travel as faster, more reliable, and passenger-centric.Looking Ahead

This collaboration between two Bengaluru-based innovators—Fresh Bus and Exponent Energy—sets a global benchmark for long-haul electrification, particularly for large vehicles like sleeper coaches. As charging infrastructure expands along highways, electric intercity travel could become the new standard in India, blending sustainability, comfort, and efficiency. With services launching soon on select routes, travelers can look forward to greener, more comfortable journeys that rival—or surpass—traditional options. The era of seamless, electric long-haul bus travel in India has arrived.
