Hero MotoCorp, one of the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturers by volume, is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking electric vehicle that redefines versatility in urban and commercial mobility. Developed by its innovation-driven sub-brand Surge, the Surge S32 is India’s first 2-in-1 electric vehicle that can seamlessly transform from a personal electric scooter into a three-wheeler cargo/passenger carrier — and back — in just 3 minutes.
First showcased as a radical concept at the Hero World 2024 event, the Surge S32 has now crossed a major milestone. It has received official type approval from the Government of India under the newly created L2-5 vehicle category, making it the world’s first “category-swapping” or “class-shifting” vehicle. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari personally highlighted the achievement, calling it a pioneering innovation for sustainable mobility.
The Surge S32 is built on an Advanced Modular Smart Electric Platform. At its core, it consists of two independent yet integrated parts:
- A standalone electric scooter (front section)
- A rear three-wheeler module (rickshaw-like chassis without front wheel)
When docked together, the scooter acts as the front wheel and steering unit, turning the vehicle into a full three-wheeler. With a simple button-operated mechanism (no tools required), users can detach the scooter in minutes for personal use.
This unique design targets self-employed individuals, small business owners, delivery riders, and gig workers who need both personal commuting and commercial utility from a single vehicle.
The Surge S32 features separate power systems for each mode:Scooter Mode (2-Wheeler):
- Motor: ~3–6 kW (around 4–8 hp)
- Battery: 3.5 kWh
- Top speed: 60 km/h
- Ideal for daily urban commuting and personal mobility
Three-Wheeler Mode (Cargo/Passenger):
- Motor: ~10–11 kW (around 13.4 hp)
- Battery: 11 kWh
- Top speed: 50 km/h
- Payload capacity: Up to 500 kg
- Suitable for last-mile delivery, small goods transport, or even passenger variants with optional cabin
Both modes come with features like regenerative braking, LED lighting, digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth connectivity, and tamper-proof locking systems. The vehicle also supports fast charging and has been engineered for safety and durability over long distances.
After being displayed at events like Auto Expo 2025, the production-ready Surge S32 is now inching closer to market launch. Production is expected to begin soon, with an official rollout anticipated in the coming months of 2026. Hero MotoCorp aims for an initial annual production target of around 10,000 units, positioning it as a niche yet highly practical offering.
Expected pricing is projected in the range of ₹2.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh (ex-showroom), though final prices will be confirmed at launch. The vehicle will be registered with separate number plates for each configuration while being treated as one unified vehicle under the new L2-5 norms.
In a country where millions rely on two-wheelers for daily needs and three-wheelers for livelihood, the Surge S32 offers an intelligent solution — one vehicle that adapts to changing requirements throughout the day. Whether it’s dropping kids at school in the morning as a scooter or carrying goods for business in the afternoon as a three-wheeler, this innovative EV promises better asset utilization, lower ownership costs, and zero emissions.
With growing demand for versatile electric solutions in last-mile delivery and urban logistics, the Hero Surge S32 could emerge as a game-changer for India’s booming EV ecosystem.
