EV Buyers in Tamil Nadu Get Major Relief: State Extends 100% Road Tax Exemption on Electric Vehicles Until December 31, 2027

In a significant boost to electric mobility, the Tamil Nadu government has extended its 100% motor vehicle tax exemption for all battery-operated electric vehicles (EVs) by an additional two years. The policy, effective from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027, will allow buyers to register EVs—covering both transport (such as commercial vehicles and e-autos) and non-transport categories (including passenger cars and two-wheelers)—without paying any motor vehicle tax.

The decision was formalized through a government order issued on December 29, 2025, under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974. It follows strong representations from vehicle manufacturers, who highlighted the growing momentum in EV adoption, which reached approximately 7.8% of total vehicle registrations in the state during 2025

Industries Minister TRB Rajaa announced the extension on social media, emphasizing its alignment with the state’s sustainability goals. He noted that the move, approved by Chief Minister MK Stalin, reinforces Tamil Nadu’s commitment to EV adoption, affordability, and large-scale manufacturing, especially amid global uncertainties in clean mobility investment

The road tax waiver—typically a one-time levy paid during vehicle registration—significantly reduces the on-road price of EVs, making them more competitive against internal combustion engine vehicles. This incentive, originally introduced under the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2019 and extended multiple times, has contributed to a surge in registrations, from around 3,500 in 2019 to over 1.4 lakh in the first 10 months of 2025 alone.

The extension provides long-term policy certainty for manufacturers and investors, encouraging further expansion of local production and charging infrastructure. Tamil Nadu is already emerging as a key EV hub, with companies like VinFast scaling up assembly operations in the state.

While challenges such as charging availability, battery costs, and grid upgrades remain, the two-year extension signals Tamil Nadu’s continued leadership among Indian states in promoting clean transport. Industry experts view this as a critical step to sustain and accelerate adoption toward higher penetration levels in the coming years.
