Chinese automaker Chery Automobile continues its aggressive push into the Indian market by filing multiple design patents. The latest one involves its sub-brand QQ, which specialises in affordable and compact electric vehicles.
The newly patented model is the Chery QQ3 EV — a stylish electric offering that measures 4.2 metres in length. While many expect a typical compact hatchback from the QQ lineup, the QQ3 breaks that mould with its larger dimensions and practical design.
One of the most interesting features of the QQ3 is its 70-litre front trunk (frunk). This clever addition helps compensate for the vehicle’s overall size and layout, providing extra storage space for cables, small luggage, or daily essentials — something rarely seen in this segment.
The QQ3 also offers generous rear cargo capacity, starting at 375 litres and expandable up to 1,450 litres with the rear seats folded. Additional under-seat storage further enhances its practicality for city and family use.
Key Highlights from Patent Images
- Modern, friendly “smiling” front design with distinctive LED lighting
- Spacious five-seater cabin
- Large 15.6-inch high-resolution infotainment screen powered by advanced Snapdragon 8155 chipset
- Clean, tech-focused interior with ambient lighting and premium touches
- Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup (uncommon in budget EVs)
In its home market of China, the QQ3 EV offers two battery options with a claimed range of up to 420 km (CLTC cycle). Power output reaches around 128 bhp in the higher variant. Real-world range in India is expected to be competitive for daily commuting and short highway runs.
This patent filing comes through Chery’s partnership with JSW Motors, which is actively preparing to bring multiple Chery and sub-brand models to India. The QQ3 appears positioned as an affordable electric vehicle, potentially rivaling models like the Tata Nexon EV, MG Windsor EV, or other compact electric SUVs/crossovers in the ₹8–15 lakh range (estimated, based on China pricing converted to Indian context). The QQ3’s blend of compact-yet-spacious design, practical frunk, strong range, and modern features makes it a strong contender in India’s fast-growing budget EV segment.
Chery has been filing several patents in India recently, signalling serious intent to localise and launch a wider portfolio through its Indian partner. While no official launch timeline has been announced for the QQ3, the patent is a clear indicator that the model is under active consideration for the Indian market.
