BYD is set to make history in India by launching the Sealion 6 DM-i on June 9, 2026 — becoming the first automaker in the country to introduce a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).The Chinese EV giant has officially confirmed the launch date for its much-awaited Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV. In recent days, BYD has been releasing teasers highlighting the upcoming model, building strong anticipation for India’s first PHEV offering from a major global brand.
The BYD Sealion 6 DM-i will be powered by BYD’s advanced DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid technology, which combines a high-efficiency petrol engine with a powerful electric motor and the renowned Blade Battery. This system is globally acclaimed for delivering exceptional fuel efficiency, strong performance, and long electric-only driving range.
Globally, the Sealion 6 DM-i is known for offering a combined range of up to 1,092 km, making it highly suitable for Indian conditions where long-distance travel and fuel efficiency are critical. It is expected to deliver a strong blend of electric driving for daily commutes and hybrid capability for highway runs.
This launch marks a significant expansion of BYD’s portfolio in India, which has so far been focused exclusively on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) such as the Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 7. The introduction of PHEV technology addresses concerns around charging infrastructure and range anxiety, potentially accelerating adoption in the premium SUV segment.
The Sealion 6 PHEV was showcased at the Auto Expo 2025 and has already been spotted testing on Indian roads multiple times, indicating that BYD has been preparing thoroughly for this debut.
Expected Positioning
- Segment: Mid-size premium SUV
- Rivals: Likely to compete with strong hybrid and electrified offerings from Toyota, Honda, and upcoming PHEV models
- Expected Price: Reports suggest a range of ₹45–50 lakh (ex-showroom), though official pricing will be revealed at launch
The Sealion 6 DM-i is expected to come loaded with premium features, advanced safety systems, luxurious interiors, and BYD’s latest connected technology.
With the launch just days away on 9th June 2026, BYD is poised to open a new chapter in India’s electrified mobility story by bringing proven plug-in hybrid technology to customers who want the best of both electric and conventional powertrains.
