BYD is gearing up to expand its portfolio in India beyond pure electric vehicles. Recent spy shots of a test mule on Indian roads strongly suggest that the Chinese EV giant is preparing to introduce its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV in the country — the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i.
This move marks a strategic shift for BYD India, allowing it to target buyers concerned about charging infrastructure while still offering electric driving benefits and strong performance.
The BYD Sealion 6 stands out with BYD’s efficient DM-i (Dual Mode intelligent) plug-in hybrid system. According to available details:
- It features a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a powerful electric motor and an 18.3 kWh BYD Blade Battery.
- The hybrid setup delivers excellent efficiency with a claimed pure electric-only range of around 70–80 km (depending on the variant and testing cycle).
- Combined range can exceed 1,000–1,100 km with a full tank and charged battery, making it highly practical for long-distance travel.
Two main powertrain options are offered globally:
- FWD variant: 1.5L petrol + electric motor producing a combined 217 hp.
- AWD variant (likely for India): 1.5L turbo-petrol + more powerful motor delivering up to 323 hp and strong torque, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in around 5.9 seconds.
The Blade Battery ensures high safety standards, thermal stability, and supports both AC and DC fast charging.
The Sealion 6 follows BYD’s modern “Ocean” design philosophy with sleek lines, a bold front fascia, aerodynamic styling, and a premium crossover-SUV stance. It is positioned as a mid-size SUV, offering spacious interiors, a large boot (around 425 litres, expandable to 1,440 litres), and family-friendly practicality.
Inside, expect a tech-loaded cabin with large dual screens, premium materials, advanced connectivity, and comprehensive safety features including ADAS.
While BYD has not made an official announcement, the vehicle has already been spotted testing in India, indicating serious intent. Industry reports point to a potential launch in late 2026, making the Sealion 6 one of BYD’s first hybrid offerings in the market.
This hybrid push comes as India’s automotive industry transitions, with tightening emission norms and growing demand for vehicles that blend EV-like efficiency with the convenience of petrol/diesel.
If launched, the Sealion 6 DM-i will compete in the premium mid-size SUV segment against models like the Toyota Fortuner Hybrid (expected around the same time), Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and other upcoming PHEVs. Its combination of electric range, strong performance, low running costs, and long-distance capability could make it a compelling choice for Indian buyers
The BYD Sealion 6 DM-i represents an exciting development for the Indian market. With its efficient 1.5-litre turbo petrol hybrid system and impressive 70+ km electric-only range, it could bridge the gap between pure EVs and traditional SUVs. As more details emerge from ongoing testing, expectations are high that BYD will officially confirm its hybrid plans soon. Keep an eye out — India’s hybrid SUV battle is about to heat up.
