BYD Files Patent for Leopard 8 PHEV SUV in India: A Potential Flagship Plug-in Hybrid Addition

BYD currently sells four fully electric models in India — the Atto 3, eMAX 7, Seal, and Sealion 7 — all imported and offered as Completely Built Units (CBUs). While the company continues to strengthen its pure EV portfolio in the premium segment, it has now shown interest in plug-in hybrid technology by filing a design patent for the Leopard 8 PHEV SUV in India.

The patent filing, published on April 24, 2026, with the design registered on September 30, 2024, does not confirm an immediate launch. However, it clearly signals BYD’s intention to evaluate bringing this large, powerful plug-in hybrid SUV to Indian shores in the future.

The Leopard 8 (also known as Fangchengbao Bao 8 in some markets) is a full-size luxury SUV from BYD’s off-road-oriented sub-brand. It stands out as a bold, high-performance PHEV designed for buyers who want both electric efficiency for daily driving and the long-range flexibility of a petrol engine for highways and occasional off-road adventures.Key Specifications (Global Model):

  • Dimensions: Approximately 5,195 mm in length, 1,994 mm in width, and around 1,875–1,905 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm. This makes it a substantial three-row SUV capable of seating 6 or 7 passengers comfortably.
  • Powertrain: Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) system featuring a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with dual electric motors (front + rear) on an all-wheel-drive setup.
  • Performance: Combined system output of up to 748 PS (550 kW) and 760 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, with a top speed limited to around 180 km/h.
  • Battery & Range: Equipped with a 36.8 kWh Blade Battery (LFP chemistry). It offers approximately 100–125 km of pure electric range (depending on test cycle), while the total combined range can reach an impressive 1,200 km.
  • Off-Road Capability: High ground clearance (around 310 mm), strong wading depth, adjustable suspension, and robust body-on-frame construction in some configurations, making it suitable for light off-roading.
  • Efficiency: When the battery is depleted, fuel consumption is claimed at around 8.5 L/100 km.

The Leopard 8 features a modern, boxy yet premium design with a commanding road presence. Inside, it is expected to offer a luxurious cabin with large infotainment screens, premium materials, and advanced comfort features typical of BYD’s flagship models.

India’s premium SUV segment is gradually opening up to plug-in hybrids as buyers seek a balance between zero-emission daily commuting and worry-free long-distance travel, especially given the still-developing charging infrastructure in many parts of the country. As a PHEV, the Leopard 8 could appeal to affluent customers looking for:

  • Electric driving for city use with lower running costs
  • Extended range for inter-city and highway journeys
  • Strong performance and luxury in a large, feature-rich package

Currently, all four BYD models in India are pure EVs imported as CBUs, attracting higher duties and premium pricing. Introducing a PHEV like the Leopard 8 would diversify BYD’s offerings and allow the company to test the market’s appetite for plug-in hybrid technology.

Current BYD Lineup in India (All CBUs)

  • Atto 3 – Compact electric SUV (entry point)
  • eMAX 7 – Premium electric MPV
  • Seal – Sporty electric sedan
  • Sealion 7 – High-performance electric SUV (flagship EV)

Note that BYD has announced a price increase of up to 3% across its existing models, effective from May 2026, due to rising costs. While there is no official timeline or confirmation for the Leopard 8’s India launch, the patent filing keeps the door open. If introduced, it would likely be positioned as a top-tier luxury PHEV SUV competing with other high-end offerings in the segment.

This development highlights BYD’s long-term ambition to offer multiple new-energy vehicle technologies in India as the market evolves. Whether the Leopard 8 eventually reaches Indian showrooms remains to be seen, but the patent certainly builds anticipation for a more diverse BYD portfolio in the future. Stay tuned for any official announcements from BYD India.
