The BYD Atto 2 midsize SUV, expected to launch in India this year, has been spotted testing once more on Indian roads. The latest spy shots reveal several exterior design elements that closely match the internationally available model, confirming that development and validation for the Indian market are progressing.
The test mule shows the Atto 2’s compact SUV proportions, with a silhouette similar to the larger Atto 3. Visible elements include the distinctive LED headlamp and DRL signature, connected taillights, dual-tone alloy wheels, and black cladding around the wheel arches and lower body. While much of the vehicle remains under camouflage, the overall stance and key lighting graphics align with the global version of the Atto 2 (known as the Yuan UP in China).
BYD offers the Atto 2 in both pure-electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV / DM-i) versions in international markets.
- The EV variant typically features a front-wheel-drive setup with a single electric motor (around 130–176 hp depending on the market) paired with Blade battery packs of approximately 45–51 kWh, offering claimed ranges in the region of 310–410 km depending on the testing cycle.
- The PHEV (DM-i) version combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a smaller battery pack, delivering strong combined range figures (approaching 900–1,000 km in some markets) along with pure-electric capability for daily commuting.
It remains to be seen which powertrain version — or both — BYD will introduce in India this year. The company has so far focused primarily on pure EVs in the Indian market, but has been evaluating plug-in hybrid technology as well.
If launched, the Atto 2 is expected to sit below the Atto 3 as a more compact and potentially more affordable offering. It would compete in the highly contested midsize SUV / compact electric SUV space against models such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, and the upcoming Maruti e Vitara.BYD had filed a design patent for the Atto 2 in India earlier, and previous test mule sightings date back to 2025. The latest appearance suggests that local testing is intensifying as the company prepares for a possible market introduction later in 2026.
