India’s two-wheeler market is seeing a wave of acceptance as more people consider buying electric two-wheelers, with 43 percent of potential buyers considering it, up from 30 percent during FY2024. This shows that there is a clear trend for electric vehicles becoming more mainstream within the industry.
In addition to this, outright rejections of electric two-wheelers have dropped from 38 percent to 29 percent. This shows that consumers are becoming less sceptical of electric two-wheelers, with concerns around range, charging infrastructure, performance and second hand value being alleviated. This is a major turning point in the industry, which has traditionally focused on petrol powered and inexpensive scooters and motorbikes.
Since April 2026 up until August 2026, there has been a large increase in the proportion of electric two-wheelers sold. The total number of two-wheelers sold has increased to 9.9 percent, almost double the 5.5 percent of electric two-wheelers sold during the same time period during FY2024. Scooters have seen an increase in electric scooters with the proportion of scooters sold increasing from 16.8 percent to 24.1 percent. Electric scooters are proving to be very popular compared to petrol scooters.
The two-wheeler market in India is one of the biggest and most competitive globally. Millions of homes use two-wheelers as their main or only form of transport. More people considering electric two-wheelers will help manufacturers capitalise on the growing market. This also gives evidence to policy makers that the incentives, investment in infrastructure and regulation is having an impact. The increase in consideration rate and decrease in rejections shows that the market is shifting towards wider consideration.
Looking forward, if products continue to improve, along with charging experience and overall cost, there will continue to be growth. However, almost half of potential buyers are now considering electric two-wheelers and the proportion of electric two-wheelers being sold each month is increasing. Overall, the market is undergoing a quiet revolution. Over the coming months we will see how fast this interest translates into market share
