Bajaj Auto’s iconic Chetak electric scooter has officially surpassed 800,000 cumulative retail sales in India, marking a significant achievement in the country’s electric two-wheeler (e2W) segment. According to data from the government’s Vahan portal, the company has delivered 800,085 units from its launch in January 2020 through June 27, 2026.

This milestone positions the Chetak as one of the top-performing electric scooters, making Bajaj Auto the third manufacturer to reach the 800,000-unit mark in the e2W category, following Ola Electric and TVS Motor Co.

The Chetak’s journey began modestly. In its early years, sales were limited due to the nascent EV market, supply challenges, and a developing dealer network:2020: Just 1,243 units
2021: 4,765 units
2022: 26,758 units
2023: 75,112 units

Growth accelerated sharply from 2024 onward. The model crossed 200,000 units in 2024 (201,166 units, up 168% YoY) and nearly 280,000 in 2025 (279,685 units). By mid-2026, Bajaj has already retailed over 211,000 units, representing strong 51% year-on-year growth in the first half of the year.

A remarkable 86% of total sales (around 692,000 units) have come in the past two-and-a-half years, highlighting the scooter’s surging popularity as consumer acceptance of electric mobility grows, supported by improving infrastructure and attractive product offering

The Chetak currently commands approximately 22% share of the Indian e2W market in 2026 so far, up significantly from single-digit figures in earlier years. It ranks as a strong No. 2 or competitive player behind TVS in recent periods, ahead of Ather, Hero Vida, and a struggling Ola Electric in many months.

Bajaj’s success stems from several factors:

  • Product Evolution: Multiple variants (including refreshed C-series models) offering better range, performance, features, and usability tailored to Indian conditions.
  • Network Expansion: Broader availability through exclusive outlets and shared motorcycle dealerships, reaching hundreds of cities.
  • Build Quality and Trust: Leveraging the legacy of the original Chetak scooter — known for durability and reliability — in its modern electric avatar.
  • Manufacturing Scale: Production from facilities in Chakan and Akurdi, with capacity supporting higher volumes.

With monthly averages exceeding 35,000 units in early 2026, the Chetak is projected to become the first electric scooter from Bajaj to cross 400,000 units in a single calendar year. This would represent another major leap for the company and the segment.

India’s electric two-wheeler industry has grown rapidly, with cumulative sales crossing several million units. Legacy players like Bajaj and TVS have gained ground with reliable, service-oriented offerings, while the market consolidates among top brands. The Chetak’s rise reflects shifting consumer preferences toward established names that combine trust, after-sales support, and value.

Bajaj Auto continues to invest in expanding Chetak production capacity and exploring export opportunities, signaling confidence in sustained long-term demand for practical, everyday electric scooters.

Crossing the 800,000-unit mark is more than a sales figure — it underscores the successful revival of a beloved Indian brand in the electric era. The Chetak has transitioned from a cautious EV entrant to a volume driver that is helping shape India’s sustainable mobility future. As the market matures, Bajaj’s focus on quality, accessibility, and continuous improvement positions the Chetak strongly for further growth.
