Piaggio Group is gearing up to enter India’s competitive value scooter segment with a fresh platform that will debut in 2027. The Italian manufacturer is set to develop a complete range of Aprilia motorcycles, which will include both internal combustion (petrol) and electric variants, targeting the entry-level segment at Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.30 lakh. The company’s Chairman, CEO, and Managing Director, Diego Graffi, revealed that the upcoming offering will leverage India’s demand for affordable two-wheelers and provide buyers with a choice between petrol and electric powertrains. The new Aprilia models will also utilise a dedicated platform, designed exclusively for the Indian market and customer preferences.

Graffi stated, “What is interesting about this project is that instead of adapting a petrol engine platform to accommodate an electric motor, we designed the architecture from the ground up to utilise electric powertrains as a primary energy source. The India-specific platform has been in development for several years and represents a critical pillar in Piaggio’s broader strategic growth plan in the country. Our intention is to create a versatile powertrain solution that can be applied across ICE and EV propulsion systems, giving customers the best of both worlds without sacrificing design, packaging, or performance.” He further added, “We want to target the most relevant pricing segment in India, which currently spans from approximately Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,30,000. This will see the introduction of both petrol and electric variants with the more premium EVs commanding prices towards the higher end of the spectrum. ‘So it will be a range of products that we will be launching,’ Graffi concluded.

Interestingly, the new Aprilia scooters and motorcycles will provide buyers with an extensive choice of both petrol and electric powertrains. The company is counting on India’s strong demand for affordable two-wheelers to drive its growth in the years ahead. Aprilia has been focusing on premium sports bikes till date, but the new models will enable the brand to target a more extensive customer base. Furthermore, Piaggio is banking on India’s vast domestic market and its ability to offer cost-effective production to build more value-packed vehicles. The company is already leveraging its Indian manufacturing facilities to produce Aprilia RS 457, Tuono, and other sport bikes for the domestic as well as the export market. The CEO asserted that Piaggio India has the potential to scale its exports in the future. Aprilia’s value scooters and motorcycles will also help the company capture the attention of more buyers who are considering transitioning to electric transportation.

As India’s electric vehicle infrastructure continues to improve, Piaggio is set to benefit from the rising demand for EVs. With the new electric motorcycles and scooters, Aprilia will be able to offer more customers an accessible entry point to electric mobility while encouraging them to upgrade to its premium EVs. The company is expected to position its top-tier electric motorcycles at the higher end of the price spectrum, offering buyers more features and performance. Aprilia’s new petrol and electric motorcycles and scooters are set to debut in India in 2027 and have the potential to become popular thanks to their advanced features and competitive pricing.
