A camouflaged prototype of KTM’s first electric motorcycle has been spotted testing on Indian roads by a subscriber, confirming that development of the long-awaited battery-powered model is advancing steadily. First revealed last year as the E-Duke concept at the company’s Motohall in Austria, the test mule shows clear signs of its electric identity through the complete absence of a silencer, the lack of a conventional gear shifter, and notably silent operation during runs. These characteristics strongly indicate a pure electric powertrain, and the bike is now expected to launch relatively soon following its earlier announcement.
The KTM E-Duke draws heavily from the 390 Duke platform, utilising a closely related chassis that helps retain the brand’s signature sharp handling and aggressive streetfighter stance. Early indications point to a 10 kW nominal electric motor paired with a 5.5 kWh battery pack mounted low in the frame for optimal weight distribution. While official range figures remain unconfirmed, preliminary estimates based on the battery capacity suggest a real-world range in the region of 100 kilometres under mixed riding conditions, making it suitable for urban commuting and short inter-city trips. Power is delivered through a chain final drive, preserving the familiar mechanical feel associated with KTM motorcycles.
In terms of features, the prototype incorporates performance-oriented hardware expected to carry over to production, including adjustable upside-down front forks, a rear monoshock, disc brakes at both ends, and alloy wheels. The design retains the sharp, angular bodywork of the Duke family, complete with a distinctive headlamp, slim digital instrument display, and a stepped seat. As the motorcycle is likely to be manufactured in India through KTM’s partnership with Bajaj, it is being tested extensively under local road and traffic conditions to fine-tune performance, thermal management, and ride characteristics for the domestic market.
With electrification gaining momentum in the two-wheeler segment, the arrival of a KTM-badged electric motorcycle represents a significant step for the Austrian brand. The combination of a compact yet usable battery, instant torque from the electric motor, and the brand’s established reputation for dynamic riding is expected to appeal to younger buyers seeking a sporty zero-emission alternative.
