Maruti’s Second EV: Affordable Three-Row Electric MPV Expected at 2027 Bharat Mobility Expo

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, is preparing to take another major step in its electrification journey. After launching its first dedicated electric vehicle, the e Vitara, the company is set to reveal its second electric model early next year at the 2027 Bharat Mobility Expo. While Maruti has not officially confirmed the exact model or platform, industry reports and testing sightings strongly point toward a practical three-row electric MPV as the frontrunner. This upcoming offering is expected to expand the brand’s EV lineup beyond SUVs and address the growing demand for family-oriented electric vehicles in India.

The most prominent contender is a three-row electric multi-purpose vehicle, internally referred to in some reports as the YMC. Test mules of this model have already been spotted on Indian roads, camouflaged yet clearly showing SUV-inspired proportions with a taller, more upright stance suited for people-carrying duties. Unlike a pure conversion of the popular Ertiga, the new electric MPV is believed to ride on the same HEARTECT-e dedicated electric platform that underpins the e Vitara. This skateboard-style architecture allows for a flat floor, better space utilisation and improved structural rigidity, which should translate into a roomier cabin especially in the second and third rows.

Given the rising competition in the electric MPV segment, Maruti’s entry makes strategic sense. Kia has already launched the Carens Clavis EV, priced from around Rs 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom) with claimed ranges of up to 490 km depending on the battery pack. Other players are also eyeing this space with seven-seater electric options. Maruti’s version is expected to be positioned more accessibly, potentially undercutting the Carens Clavis EV on price and emerging as one of the most affordable three-row electric MPVs in the country. Such pricing would align with Maruti’s traditional strength in delivering value-for-money vehicles to mass-market buyers.

Powertrain details are likely to mirror those of the e Vitara. Expect two lithium iron phosphate battery options—around 49 kWh and 61 kWh—paired with front-wheel-drive electric motors producing roughly 142-172 hp. Claimed driving ranges could approach 400-500 km on a full charge, though real-world figures for a heavier MPV body may be slightly lower. Features are expected to include a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, Level 2 ADAS, ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof options and multiple airbags, drawing heavily from the e Vitara’s equipment list while adapting to family needs with flexible seating configurations (six or seven seats) and ample boot space.

The timing of the reveal at the 2027 Bharat Mobility Expo is significant. The event has become a key platform for major automotive launches and technology showcases in India. Unveiling the second EV there would allow Maruti to generate strong pre-launch buzz ahead of a possible market introduction later in 2027. Production is likely to take place at one of the company’s facilities with an eye on both domestic sales and potential exports, similar to the e Vitara strategy.

For Indian families, this model could prove transformative. The traditional preference for spacious three-row vehicles remains strong, yet electric options in this category have been limited and relatively expensive until now. An affordable Maruti electric MPV would lower the entry barrier, offering lower running costs, quieter operation and zero tailpipe emissions without sacrificing practicality. Combined with Maruti’s extensive sales and service network, plus its expanding charging infrastructure plans, the vehicle stands a strong chance of accelerating EV adoption among multi-member households.

Of course, challenges remain. Battery costs, charging infrastructure in smaller towns and consumer range anxiety must still be addressed. Competitors will not stand still either. Nevertheless, Maruti’s dual approach—premium-leaning SUVs like the e Vitara followed by a more accessible family MPV—positions the company well to capture a larger share of India’s fast-growing electric passenger vehicle market. As details firm up closer to the 2027 Bharat Mobility Expo, anticipation is already building around what could become one of the most important mass-market EVs of the coming years.
