The three-row electric SUV has climbed to the top of India’s passenger EV charts, overtaking the long-dominant MG Windsor. Strong demand for practical family EVs, competitive pricing, and a compelling feature set have propelled the XEV 9S ahead in the first quarter of FY27 (April–June 2026).Built on Mahindra’s INGLO skateboard platform, the XEV 9S slots as the practical, more conventional three-row sibling to the coupe-styled XEV 9e and the sportier BE 6. It offers three LFP battery options — 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh — delivering claimed MIDC ranges of approximately 521 km, 600 km and 679 km respectively. Power outputs scale with the pack: around 228–231 bhp on the entry battery, roughly 241–245 bhp on the mid-size unit, and up to 281–286 bhp (210 kW) with 380 Nm of torque on the top 79 kWh version. All variants are rear-wheel-drive, with 0–100 km/h claimed in about 7 seconds and a top speed near 202 km/h. DC fast-charging (up to 180 kW on the largest pack) supports 20–80% in around 20 minutes.
Higher trims pack Level-2+ ADAS (five radars + camera on top packs), enabling adaptive cruise, lane centring, emergency steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alerts and more, alongside seven airbags on premium variants. The cabin features dual or triple screens, AI-powered connected features, a panoramic sunroof option, premium audio, and family-friendly practicality including third-row seating. Pricing starts near ₹19.95–21.9 lakh (ex-showroom) depending on battery and pack, positioning it as strong value against rivals such as the Tata Harrier EV, BYD Atto 3 and others.
India’s overall electric passenger vehicle market nearly doubled year-on-year in Q1 FY27, with registrations exceeding 82,000 units. Mahindra’s Born Electric trio (BE 6, XEV 9e and especially the XEV 9S) drove the brand to second place overall with roughly 20,000 units, ahead of JSW MG. The XEV 9S itself has shown rapid monthly traction since deliveries ramped up, regularly posting 3,000–4,000+ units and periodically claiming the single-model sales crown.
The result underscores a clear shift: buyers want electric SUVs that combine usable range, family space, advanced driver assistance and modern tech without exotic pricing. With the XEV 9S leading the pack, Indian electric SUVs have taken another decisive step forward.
