India’s transition to electric mobility is accelerating at a remarkable pace, powered by strong government policy support and a sharp expansion in charging infrastructure. Recent official data presented in Parliament underscores how far the country has come in just a few years.

As of 26 July 2026, the total number of registered electric vehicles across all categories in India crossed the landmark figure of 1 crore (exactly 1,00,23,396), according to VAHAN data shared by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.

National EV penetration has risen dramatically from just 0.71% in FY20 to 8.26% in FY26 — an 11-fold increase over six years. This growth reflects both rising consumer acceptance and the impact of successive policy interventions.

India has operationalised 52,718 public EV charging stations (as of 31 March 2026). Of these, 16,561 are equipped with fast chargers. This expansion has improved the vehicle-to-charger ratio to approximately 1:175, helping ease range anxiety and supporting wider adoption.

The progress has been driven by schemes such as FAME-II and the PM E-DRIVE programme, which have provided financial incentives for vehicle purchases and substantial funding for public charging infrastructure. Lower operating costs and zero tailpipe emissions continue to make EVs an increasingly attractive proposition for Indian buyers, particularly in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments that dominate the overall EV numbers.

While challenges around battery localisation, charging density in smaller towns and the higher upfront cost of passenger EVs remain, the latest figures show clear momentum. With over one crore electric vehicles already on the road and penetration climbing steadily, India is firmly on the path toward a cleaner, more sustainable mobility future.
