MG Motor India (JSW MG Motor India) has officially announced a new vehicle platform tailored for the Indian market, marking a significant milestone as the company introduces hybrid powertrains — specifically plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) — for the first time in India.
This development underscores MG’s commitment to a multi-powertrain strategy that balances internal combustion engines (ICE), pure electric vehicles (EVs), and now hybrids to meet evolving customer demands and regulatory requirements in one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets.
The new platform, expected to underpin upcoming models including a three-row SUV based on the global Wuling Starlight 560 (internally codenamed around project 520/560 and potentially named Hector Hawk in India), is designed for flexibility. It will support petrol, fully electric, and plug-in hybrid configurations.
This marks MG’s entry into the PHEV segment in India, where options remain limited among mass-market brands. The platform approach allows efficient localization, better packaging for spacious cabins, and the ability to offer customers a range of powertrain choices without compromising on features or performance.
Industry analysts see this as a strategic move to counter softening pure-EV demand while future-proofing against stricter CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms.
The PHEV variant will feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery pack. Combined system output is expected around 197 hp and 230 Nm of torque, delivering strong performance with an electric-only range of approximately 100 km (under CLTC cycle) and a total range exceeding 1,100 km
Key highlights include:
- Smooth transitions between electric and hybrid modes.
- Potential for strong real-world fuel efficiency.
- Suitability for both city commuting and highway journeys.
MG is also developing advanced next-generation hybrid+ systems globally (with features like Toyota-style power-split devices and semi-solid-state batteries), which could make their way to future Indian models.
The first vehicle on this new platform is a three-row SUV expected to slot between the Hector and larger Majestor in MG’s lineup. It will rival vehicles like the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and potentially the XUV 7XO in PHEV form
The model is slated for a technology preview today (July 16, 2026), with full launches of PHEV and EV variants expected later in 2026. It will emphasize premium features, modern design, advanced connectivity, and spacious interiors typical of MG’s current offerings.
MG Motor India aims for new energy vehicles (EVs + PHEVs/hybrids) to form the majority of its sales. The company plans multiple NEV launches in FY2027, including this PHEV SUV, additional EVs, and future models on platforms like the modular SIGMA architecture (which will support even more powertrain combinations for next-gen Astor and ZS replacements).
Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director of JSW MG Motor India, has emphasized the brand’s vision to lead in new energy vehicles while offering customers choice.
For the first time, MG customers in India will have access to plug-in hybrid technology that combines the convenience of petrol refueling with electric efficiency and instant torque. This is particularly appealing amid range anxiety concerns with pure EVs and rising fuel costs.
Pricing is expected to be competitive, positioning the new SUV as a value-packed alternative in the premium midsize and three-row SUV segments.MG Motor India’s move reinforces its position as an innovative player willing to adapt global platforms for local needs. With today’s announcement, the company is poised to strengthen its portfolio and capture a larger share of India’s growing utility vehicle market. Stay tuned for the full technology preview details and launch timelines.
