Tata Motors is gearing up to launch the much-awaited Tata Sierra EV with a unique dual-battery strategy. The upcoming electric SUV will be offered with two battery pack options — 63 kWh and 75 kWh — sourced from two different international suppliers, marking an interesting blend of global technology partnerships.
Dual Battery Strategy: A Smart Move by TataAccording to details emerging ahead of the launch, the Tata Sierra EV will feature:
- 63 kWh Battery Pack
Supplied by Gotion High-tech, a leading Chinese battery manufacturer.
Tata Autocomp has a Joint Venture (JV) with Gotion in India, which is expected to locally manufacture these battery cells and packs in the future.
Notably, Volkswagen Group is a major investor in Gotion, adding another layer of global validation to this partnership. - 75 kWh Battery Pack
Supplied by Octillion, a US-based battery technology company.
Octillion has already set up a manufacturing facility in Gujarat, supporting the “Make in India” initiative and strengthening the local EV supply chain.
Why Two Different Battery Suppliers?
This dual-supplier approach allows Tata Motors to:
- Mitigate supply chain risks
- Offer customers a choice between two range and performance options
- Balance cost and technology
- Accelerate localization efforts through both Chinese and American partnerships
The 63 kWh variant is expected to be more affordable and targeted at customers seeking strong value, while the larger 75 kWh pack will appeal to buyers looking for higher range and premium performance.
A Significant Step for Tata’s EV Offensive
The Tata Sierra EV is one of the most anticipated electric vehicles in India. Positioned as a rugged, lifestyle-oriented electric SUV with retro-modern design, it is expected to compete in the fast-growing mid-size electric SUV segment against rivals like the Mahindra XEV 9e, Hyundai Creta Electric, and Kia EV variants.
With batteries coming from both China (via local JV) and the United States, Tata is showcasing a pragmatic and globally connected approach to building a robust EV ecosystem in India.More details regarding exact range figures, performance, pricing, and launch timeline are expected to be revealed soon.
