Tata Motors has confirmed that its upcoming premium electric vehicle brand, Avinya, will be built on a Chery-engineered platform. The announcement was made by Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, during the company’s Investor Day on June 23, 2026.This strategic move leverages Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) long-standing partnership with Chinese automaker Chery. The platform in question is the same advanced architecture being used for the reborn Freelander electric SUV.
Tata Motors had originally planned to develop the Avinya range on JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). However, following delays, the company opted for the Chery-JLR platform to accelerate its premium EV programme while maintaining high standards in technology, performance, and quality. The Chery-engineered platform is expected to provide:
- Advanced battery integration and thermal management
- Superior ride and handling dynamics
- Support for higher voltage architectures suitable for fast charging
- Strong potential for both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations
The first model under the Avinya brand (codenamed Avinya X / P2) is now targeted for launch in 2027. It will be produced at Tata’s new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu, in partnership with JLR. Initial models are expected to feature battery packs in the 65–80 kWh range, positioning them in the premium segment.Avinya is being developed as Tata’s dedicated premium electric brand, aimed at offering sophisticated design, advanced technology, and global appeal while competing with established luxury EV players in India and potentially in export markets.
Shailesh Chandra emphasised that the collaboration with JLR and its partners will be a key pillar in Tata’s global premium EV journey. By licensing the proven Chery-JLR platform, Tata gains access to cutting-edge EV technology developed at scale, helping it deliver desirable products faster and more cost-effectively.This development underscores Tata Motors’ pragmatic approach — combining global partnerships with local manufacturing to strengthen its position in India’s rapidly growing premium electric vehicle segment. More details on specific Avinya models, performance specifications, and pricing are expected in the coming months.
