NITI Aayog has emphasised that energy security is a core driver of India’s electric vehicle (EV) transition, alongside environmental and economic goals. The remarks were made at the Transportation Decarbonization Summit (TDS) 2026 held in Berlin.

Speaking at the prestigious global event organised by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), Archana Mittal, Program Director – Electric Mobility and Infrastructure Connectivity at NITI Aayog, outlined India’s comprehensive strategy for vehicle electrification. She highlighted a balanced approach combining strong policy support, manufacturing incentives, and aggressive charging infrastructure development.

Mittal stressed that India sees transport electrification not merely as a pathway to cleaner mobility but as a strategic opportunity to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and build long-term economic resilience.

NITI Aayog detailed several ongoing and planned measures to accelerate EV adoption:

  • Manufacturing Incentives: Continued focus on the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for automobiles and auto components, along with support for battery manufacturing and localisation of the EV value chain.
  • Charging Infrastructure Expansion: Ambitious plans to build a dense nationwide network of public charging stations, with emphasis on both slow and fast chargers in cities, highways, and key commercial hubs.
  • Demand-Side Support: Schemes such as PM e-DRIVE and state-level incentives to make EVs more affordable for consumers.
  • Regulatory and Ecosystem Development: Promotion of battery swapping, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration, and skill development programmes for the EV sector.

The Transportation Decarbonization Summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to discuss the economics of electrification, government roles in supporting zero-emission transport, and strategies to enhance manufacturing competitiveness while advancing energy security.

NITI Aayog’s participation underscores India’s rising influence in global conversations on sustainable mobility and its commitment to a pragmatic, self-reliant transition to electric vehicles.

As India targets significant EV adoption in the coming years, the integration of energy security considerations is expected to shape future policies, investments, and international collaborations in the sector.
