Key Highlights
- Tata Motors continued its strong dominance with 10,339 electric vehicles sold. The company crossed the 10,000-unit monthly mark for the first time, driven by consistent demand for Nexon EV, Punch EV, Curvv EV, and Tiago EV. Tata’s market share remained close to 40%, reinforcing its leadership in the Indian EV space.
- Mahindra secured the second position with 6,210 units. The brand nearly doubled its sales compared to the previous year, thanks to the growing popularity of its new electric SUVs – the BE 6e and XEV 9e.
- MG Motor held the third spot with nearly 4,900 units, maintaining a healthy ~19% market share.
- Maruti Suzuki showed strong momentum and entered the top 5 with around 1,550 units sold, marking one of its best performances in the electric segment so far.
- VinFast and Hyundai continued to build their presence, though their volumes remained lower compared to the top two players.
May 2026 has emerged as one of the strongest months for electric car sales in India this year. The near-doubling of sales compared to last year reflects improving customer sentiment, better product offerings, and increasing charging infrastructure. Tata and Mahindra together commanded nearly 64% of the total market, highlighting the clear lead of Indian brands in the electric passenger vehicle segment.
The growing contribution from Maruti Suzuki and new entrants like VinFast also signals rising competition, which is expected to bring more options and competitive pricing for consumers in the coming months.
