In a significant milestone for India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki has broken into the country’s top five electric passenger vehicle manufacturers by sales. The company has achieved this feat despite entering the EV segment relatively late, primarily on the back of strong demand for its first battery-electric vehicle, the e Vitara.

According to industry data for the January-May 2026 period, Maruti Suzuki sold 4,365 electric cars in the domestic market. This performance places it ahead of established players including VinFast (4,133 units), as well as BYD, Hyundai, and Kia.

Maruti Suzuki’s momentum accelerated in May 2026, with the company delivering 1,577 electric vehicles. This strong showing helped it solidify its position in the top five for the month, pushing VinFast (1,224 units) to fifth place, while BYD recorded 683 units and Hyundai trailed further behind.

  • Tata Motors: ~10,000+ units (market leader)
  • Mahindra: ~6,100 units
  • MG Motor: ~4,900 units
  • Maruti Suzuki: 1,577 units
  • VinFast: 1,224 units
  • BYD: 683 units

Maruti Suzuki’s management highlighted robust customer interest amid rising fuel prices. Bookings for the e Vitara nearly doubled in May 2026, with orders crossing significant milestones as buyers shifted toward electric and CNG options.

However, supply remains a key challenge. Limited production capacity has constrained the company’s ability to fully capitalize on the surging demand. Executives noted that ramping up output at facilities, including the new Kharkhoda plant, will be critical to meeting order backlogs and sustaining growth

Maruti Suzuki launched the e Vitara in early 2026 after unveiling it at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. The model, available with multiple battery options (including Battery-as-a-Service variants), has quickly gained traction in the competitive mid-size electric SUV segment. Its pricing, feature set, and Maruti’s vast service network have appealed to first-time EV buyers.

This entry into the top five marks a notable shift. While Tata Motors continues to dominate the EV space, followed by Mahindra and MG Motor, Maruti’s rapid climb underscores the growing mainstream acceptance of electric vehicles in India. Traditional ICE giants are now accelerating their EV strategies to protect and expand market share.
