Tata Motors is accelerating development of its much-awaited all-electric Safari. Fresh spy shots of test mules confirm that the project, internally codenamed ‘Tayrona’, is progressing rapidly toward a festive season launch in 2026 (around Diwali).

Recent images show a heavily camouflaged Safari.EV cruising on a highway near Pune, Maharashtra. The test mule retains the bold, muscular silhouette of the current Safari but features clear EV-specific cues. These include a blanked-off front grille (for better aerodynamics), closed-off lower air intakes, and distinctive wheel designs optimized for efficiency. The overall stance appears largely unchanged, suggesting Tata will carry over the commanding road presence that has made the ICE Safari a success.

Tata Motors’ state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Pune is already producing the Harrier.EV, and the Safari.EV is expected to share the same production line, enabling efficient scaling.

The Safari.EV will ride on Tata’s advanced acti.ev+ platform, the same architecture underpinning the Harrier.EV. It is expected to share battery packs and powertrain options with its sibling, including:

  • 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery options.
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD) as standard.
  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) on higher variants.

Expected real-world range is around 450-500+ km, with some reports suggesting up to 600+ km under ideal MIDC conditions on the larger battery. Performance should be strong, with instant torque delivery typical of EVs, and AWD variants likely to include dedicated off-road and snow modes for enhanced capability.

As Tata’s first 7-seater electric SUV, the Safari.EV will target families looking for premium space, comfort, and zero-emission mobility. It is positioned to rival models like the upcoming Mahindra XEV 9S.

The interior is expected to be largely carried over from the ICE Safari, with possible EV-specific updates such as:

  • A new energy flow display.
  • Unique ambient lighting themes.
  • Possibly a revised center console.

Expect premium features including a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital driver display, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, premium audio, and advanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The third row should offer usable space for adults on shorter journeys, thanks to the flat-floor EV platform.

Production is slated to begin around August 2026, paving the way for a festive season market entry. Once launched, the Safari.EV will sit above the Harrier.EV as Tata’s new electric flagship, offering greater size, presence, and versatility.

Pricing is expected in the ₹25-35 lakh range (ex-showroom), depending on battery and variant, making it a compelling premium electric option in India’s growing three-row SUV segment.Tata Motors continues its aggressive EV push, and the Safari.

EV represents a significant step in bringing spacious, family-oriented electric mobility to Indian customers. More details, including official specifications, range claims, and pricing, are expected closer to the launch.
