VinFast Patents Second-Generation VF8 Design in India, Eyes Potential Launch

vinfst vf8 patent

Just weeks after unveiling the second-generation VF8 electric SUV in Vietnam, Vietnamese automaker VinFast has filed a design patent for the vehicle in India. This move signals the company’s serious interest in expanding its footprint in the Indian market, though it remains unclear whether the VF8 will actually be launched here.

The patented design is largely identical to the Vietnam-spec model, with only minor India-specific adjustments visible in the filing documents. If introduced, the VF8 would become VinFast’s flagship offering in India, sitting above the VF6 and VF7 that are already on sale.

The new-generation VF8 features a bold, modern exterior with VinFast’s signature V-shaped LED light bar, sleek segmented DRLs, and a more refined, aerodynamic stance. It is positioned as a mid-size electric SUV and is expected to target premium buyers in the Indian EV market.

Key Specifications (Vietnam Model)

  • Battery: 60.13 kWh pack
  • Powertrain: Single front-mounted electric motor producing 228 hp and 330 Nm of torque
  • Range: Up to 500 km (NEDC claimed)
  • Charging: 10% to 70% in under 30 minutes (fast charging)
  • Drivetrain: Front-Wheel Drive (FWD)

The second-gen VF8 is slightly more compact than its predecessor, with a shorter wheelbase, but offers improved ride and handling through a new chassis and Frequency Selective Dampers. It also comes equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), a large touchscreen infotainment system, and premium interior features.

Filing a design patent protects VinFast’s intellectual property and is often a precursor to a formal product launch. VinFast has been steadily strengthening its presence in India with local assembly plans and multiple models already in the pipeline.

However, the company has not yet made any official announcement regarding the VF8’s India launch timeline or pricing. If brought to the market, it could compete in the premium electric mid-size SUV segment against models like the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, and Kia EV6.This patent filing adds to the growing momentum in India’s electric SUV space and keeps VinFast firmly in the conversation as one of the more ambitious global EV players entering the Indian market.
