plug in hybrid cars

As India’s electric mobility narrative evolves beyond pure EVs, Chinese automakers are aggressively introducing plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs that combine electric efficiency with the practicality of a petrol engine. Several high-profile Chinese-origin PHEVs are slated to launch this year, offering long range, lower running costs, and reduced range anxiety.

1. MG 520 (Wuling Starlight 560 PHEV)

JSW MG Motor is preparing to launch the MG 520 (codenamed Project 520), a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560, around October 2026. Positioned as a premium mid-size 7-seater SUV, it will rival the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.

Key Highlights:

  • Expected PHEV powertrain: 1.5L petrol engine + electric motor producing around 194 hp
  • Pure electric range: ~125 km (CLTC)
  • Combined range: Up to 1,100 km
  • Will also be offered in pure EV form

This will mark MG’s entry into the PHEV segment in India and is expected to come with aggressive pricing.

2. JSW Jetour T2: JSW’s First Car

JSW Motors (the independent passenger vehicle arm of the JSW Group) will make its debut with the Jetour T2, a rugged, boxy PHEV SUV expected to launch by Diwali 2026. It will be locally assembled at JSW’s new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra

Key Highlights:

  • Built on Chery’s platform with boxy, off-road-inspired styling (often compared to the Land Rover Defender)
  • Advanced i-DM plug-in hybrid system with 1.5L turbo-petrol engine
  • Pure electric range: Up to 139 km
  • Expected to rival the Toyota Fortuner and Mahindra Scorpio-N in a more modern, tech-loaded package
  • Pricing expected in the ₹20–35 lakh range

3. BYD Sealion 6: Practical PHEV

BYD has begun testing the Sealion 6 DM-i (also known as Seal U or Song Plus DM-i) on Indian roads. It is expected to be the company’s first plug-in hybrid offering in India, with a launch likely by late 2026.

Key Highlights:

  • Mid-size SUV with sleek, modern design
  • 1.5L turbo-petrol + electric motor with BYD’s advanced DM-i technology
  • Battery: ~18.3 kWh Blade Battery
  • Pure electric range: 80–90 km
  • Combined range: Over 1,000–1,100 km
  • Spacious, feature-rich cabin with large rotating infotainment screen

4. BYD Leopard 8: Performance-Focussed Off-Roader PHEV

For buyers wanting serious performance and off-road capability, BYD is preparing the flagship Leopard 8 (from its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand). Design patents have already been filed in India, signalling strong intent.

Key Highlights:

  • Full-size, body-on-frame ladder chassis SUV (over 5.2 metres long)
  • Powerful PHEV system with up to 748 PS combined output
  • Combined range: Up to 1,200 km
  • Boxy, rugged design aimed at rivals like the Land Rover Defender
  • Premium luxury interior with advanced off-road hardware

This will be one of the most powerful and capable PHEVs in the Indian market if launched.

Why PHEVs Now?

With Piyush Goyal publicly highlighting the practicality of plug-in hybrids for Indian driving conditions, the policy and market environment is becoming more favourable. These Chinese PHEVs offer:

  • Long electric-only range for city commutes
  • Petrol backup for highways and long trips
  • Significantly lower fuel consumption and running costs
  • Potential eligibility under future green mobility incentives
