Hero MotoCorp is accelerating its electric vehicle ambitions with a major capacity expansion at its Chittoor plant. The company plans to double its EV production capacity to support aggressive growth targets, aiming for 2.8 lakh electric two-wheeler units in FY27. This move underscores Hero’s renewed push into the fast-growing electric mobility space through its VIDA brand.

Hero MotoCorp adopted a measured approach to the EV transition compared to some aggressive competitors. However, this strategy has paid off. In FY2026, VIDA emerged as one of the two fastest-growing electric two-wheeler brands in India and helped Hero break into the top five players in the segment.VIDA sold approximately 1.5 lakh units in FY2026, securing a respectable market share and demonstrating strong consumer acceptance.

The capacity expansion at Chittoor will support the launch and scaling of several new electric offerings, including:

  • A new affordable Vida scooter
  • Electric motorcycles
  • Niche and lifestyle electric formats

These upcoming models are expected to broaden VIDA’s appeal across different customer segments — from budget-conscious urban commuters to enthusiasts seeking performance-oriented electric options

The decision to nearly triple production capacity reflects Hero’s confidence in sustained EV demand. With improving charging infrastructure, falling battery costs, and rising fuel prices, the electric two-wheeler market continues to expand rapidly. Hero aims to capitalise on this momentum while leveraging its vast dealer network and after-sales infrastructure.

The company is also working on multiple future platforms, including a potential electric version of its iconic Splendor motorcycle targeted for 2027.

Hero MotoCorp’s EV push comes at a time when the overall electric two-wheeler industry is witnessing healthy growth. By ramping up local manufacturing and introducing more accessible products, Hero is positioning itself to challenge established EV players and gain meaningful market share in the coming years.

This expansion at Chittoor is a clear signal that Hero is shifting from a cautious observer to a serious contender in India’s electric two-wheeler race.
