Tata Motors has emerged as the undisputed leader in India’s electric passenger vehicle segment during the first four months of Calendar Year 2026, according to the latest sales data released by industry tracker RushLane.
From January to April 2026, the Indian EV market recorded a total of 79,063 electric car sales. Tata Motors maintained a robust portfolio advantage with a wide range of electric offerings, from the entry-level Tiago EV and Tigor EV to the popular Nexon EV, Curvv EV, and the premium Harrier EV and Safari EV. This diverse lineup helped the company deliver consistent volumes month after month.Mahindra secured the second position with 18,153 units sold. The company’s XUV400 and the newly launched BE and XUV 3XO electric variants are gaining strong traction, particularly in the competitive mid-SUV segment.
MG Motors posted impressive numbers at 19,036 units, narrowly trailing Mahindra in total but showing strong performance with models like the MG Comet EV, ZS EV, and the Windsor EV. The brand continues to appeal to urban buyers seeking stylish and feature-rich electric vehicles.
VinFast and Maruti Suzuki are the emerging challengers in the top five. VinFast has shown significant growth, especially in April 2026 with 1,231 units, indicating improving consumer acceptance of its VF6 and VF7 models. Maruti Suzuki, traditionally strong in the ICE segment, is gradually scaling up its EV game with the WagonR EV and the recently introduced Brezza EV and Fronx EV, crossing the 1,000-unit monthly mark in March and April.
