Chery and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have officially revealed the Freelander 8, the first production-ready SUV under the newly revived Freelander brand. The model, which closely follows the bold Freelander Concept 97 unveiled earlier in April 2026, marks the beginning of an ambitious plan to launch six new models over the next five years
The Freelander name, once associated with Land Rover’s entry-level SUV, has now been reborn as an independent premium brand through the long-standing Chery-JLR joint venture. JLR is responsible for the design direction, while Chery handles engineering, development, and production at its facility in Changshu, China. The new brand focuses on modern, electrified SUVs that blend British design flair with advanced Chinese technology.
The Freelander 8 is described as a mid-to-large three-row SUV with a rugged yet sophisticated “castle-style” boxy silhouette. It retains much of the Concept 97’s distinctive styling, including an upright stance, flat roofline, and signature diagonal C-pillar that nods to classic Land Rover design cues.
The Freelander 8 will be offered with a range of advanced electrified powertrains, including:
- Full EV (electric vehicle)
- PHEV (plug-in hybrid)
- Range-extender hybrid (EREV) options
It is built on Chery’s modern platform (reportedly supporting 800V architecture), promising fast charging capabilities and strong performance. Specific power outputs and battery details are expected to be confirmed closer to launch, but the powertrains are engineered for both efficiency and capable all-terrain performance
One of the standout features of the Freelander 8 is its futuristic and driver-focused cabin. The interior showcases a windscreen-length (pillar-to-pillar) digital driver’s display, creating an immersive, panoramic experience. This wide, high-resolution Mini LED-based screen spans almost the entire dashboard, complemented by a large central touchscreen.
The cabin emphasizes premium materials, a low dashboard for excellent visibility, physical controls for key functions, and a spacious three-row layout suitable for families. Advanced technology is expected to include Huawei’s latest ADS intelligent driving system, LiDAR support, and high-end connectivity features.
Launch Timeline
- China launch: Expected in the second half of 2026 (H2 2026)
- Global rollout: To follow after the initial Chinese introduction, with potential exports to markets in Asia, Europe, Australia, and beyond
Production will commence later in 2026, with the Freelander 8 positioned as the flagship or range-topper in the initial lineup.
Freelander aims to roll out a total of six models over the next five years. The brand is targeting tech-savvy customers who want a blend of rugged capability, modern electrification, and premium features at a competitive price point in the global SUV market.
This rapid development—from Concept 97 reveal to production version in just a few weeks—highlights the aggressive pace of the Chery-JLR partnership.
Summary: The Freelander 8 represents a bold new chapter for the historic nameplate. Combining JLR’s design expertise with Chery’s electrification know-how and manufacturing scale, it positions the revived Freelander brand as a serious player in the premium electrified SUV segment. More technical specifications, pricing, and variant details are anticipated in the coming months ahead of its Chinese debut in the second half of 2026.
