Maruti Suzuki Charges Ahead: 4 New EVs to Join the Lineup by 2031

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, has officially accelerated its transition toward a greener future. Following the successful initial rollout and massive export demand for the e Vitara, the company has confirmed an ambitious roadmap to launch four additional electric vehicles (EVs) in India by 2031.

With a target to become the leading player in the Indian BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) segment, Maruti Suzuki is focusing on a multi-segment strategy—ranging from mass-market hatchbacks to premium MPVs. Here is a closer look at the upcoming electric fleet

1. The YMC Electric 7-Seater MPV

Building on its dominance in the MPV segment with the Ertiga and XL6, Maruti is developing its first-ever all-electric MPV, internally codenamed YMC.

  • Platform: It will share the 27PL skateboard platform (eHEARTECT) developed in collaboration with Toyota.
  • Powertrain: Expected to borrow the e Vitara’s battery options—likely 49kWh and 61kWh units.
  • Range: Targeted range is expected to reach up to 500+ km on a full charge.
  • Launch Timeline: Production is rumored to begin by late 2026, with a market launch in 2027.
2. New Sub-4m Electric SUV

To take on rivals like the Tata Nexon.ev and the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, Maruti Suzuki is planning a sub-compact electric SUV. This vehicle is expected to be a high-volume driver for the brand, potentially utilizing the strong brand equity of models like the Brezza or Fronx.

  • Focus: Urban mobility, modern features, and competitive pricing to capture the heart of the Indian SUV market.
3. Affordable Mass-Market EV (Y2V)

True to its DNA, Maruti Suzuki is working on an “entry-level” electric hatchback, codenamed Y2V. This model is expected to be based on the Suzuki eWX concept showcased earlier.

  • Market Position: It will compete directly with the Tata Tiago.ev and MG Comet.
  • Localization: To ensure aggressive pricing, the Y2V will feature high levels of local sourcing and is expected to arrive by 2028.
4. Premium Halo EV

Completing the quartet is a premium electric vehicle aimed at elevating the brand’s tech credentials.

  • Details: While specifics are under wraps, reports suggest this could be a larger SUV or a high-performance crossover featuring a battery pack larger than 61kWh. It will serve as Maruti’s “halo” product, showcasing the pinnacle of their EV technology and safety suites.

Maruti Suzuki’s EV push isn’t just about the cars. The company has laid out a comprehensive support ecosystem:

  • Charging Network: A target of over 1,00,000 public charging points across India by 2030.
  • Service Readiness: Over 2,000 dedicated charging points already installed and a workforce of 1.5 lakh personnel trained for EV-ready workshops.
  • Export-First Approach: By leveraging global volumes (with the e Vitara already reaching 44+ countries), Maruti aims to drive down costs through massive economies of scale, eventually making EVs as accessible as their petrol counterparts.
