Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company have signed a pact to jointly develop and manufacture electric three-wheelers targeted at India’s fast-growing last-mile mobility segment. The collaboration aims to bring modern, sustainable, and practical electric auto-rickshaws to Indian roads, replacing traditional fossil-fuel-powered three-wheelers.
This partnership combines Hyundai’s expertise in design, engineering, and advanced electric vehicle technology with TVS Motor’s strong manufacturing capabilities, vast dealer network, and deep understanding of the Indian two- and three-wheeler market.
The foundation for this alliance was laid when Hyundai unveiled the Hyundai-TVS Electric Three-Wheeler (E3W) Concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in January 2025. The futuristic concept reimagines India’s iconic auto-rickshaw with a modern, eco-friendly design tailored for Indian conditions.
Key Features of the E3W Concept:
- Compact and highly manoeuvrable design suitable for narrow city streets and rough roads
- Flat floor layout for easy entry/exit and better driver comfort
- Diagonal windshield for improved visibility
- Modular interior with adjustable panels and dedicated phone holder
- Spacious cabin that can accommodate passengers, cargo, or even serve as an emergency/response vehicle
- Large tyres for better handling on varied Indian road surfaces
- Inclusive design elements, including provisions for wheelchair accessibility in some variants
Alongside the E3W, Hyundai also showcased a micro four-wheeler (E4W) concept, though the primary focus of the partnership remains on the electric three-wheeler.
Roles in the Partnership
- Hyundai Motor: Responsible for design, engineering, and providing advanced EV technology, including efficient electric powertrains and battery systems.
- TVS Motor: Will handle local manufacturing, marketing, sales, and after-sales service across India.
The collaboration is expected to enable cost-effective local production, making the electric three-wheelers affordable for fleet operators, individual drivers, and small businesses in both passenger and cargo segments.
Significance for India’s EV Ecosystem
India’s last-mile mobility market is huge, with millions of auto-rickshaws operating daily. Shifting this segment to electric power will significantly reduce emissions in congested cities, lower operating costs for drivers, and support the government’s push for cleaner mobility.
This pact also marks Hyundai’s strategic entry into the three-wheeler space in India through a strong local partner, while strengthening TVS Motor’s position in the growing electric commercial vehicle segment.
While the exact timeline for production models is yet to be announced, the signed agreement signals that development is progressing rapidly. Industry experts expect the first production electric three-wheelers from this partnership to hit the market in the coming years, starting with pilot deployments in major cities.
The Hyundai-TVS alliance is poised to deliver stylish, reliable, and efficient electric three-wheelers that offer better range, faster charging, lower maintenance, and modern features compared to existing options in the market.
