Greaves Electric Mobility has made it clear that the heart of its growth strategy for the Ampere brand lies firmly in the sub-Rs 1 lakh electric scooter segment, which it sees as the biggest untapped opportunity in India’s rapidly evolving EV two-wheeler market.
Despite increasing competition and a growing interest in premium electric scooters, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to the entry-level and mass-market category. This segment, currently dominated by petrol-powered scooters, represents the highest volume potential in the country, driven by price-sensitive buyers looking for practical daily commuting solutions.
Vikas Singh, Managing Director and CFO of Greaves Electric Mobility, highlighted the opportunity: “The sub-Rs 1 lakh category remains the single largest volume opportunity in India’s scooter market, yet it continues to be largely ICE-led.” Ampere aims to change that by offering electric alternatives that deliver better performance, lower running costs, and modern features without crossing the psychological price barrier of one lakh rupees.
To strengthen its position, the company is gearing up to launch a new Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter in FY27 (financial year 2026-27). Billed internally as an “ICE Breaker,” this upcoming model is being engineered specifically to take on popular petrol scooters head-on. It promises superior torque, improved gradeability, enhanced efficiency, and overall better ownership economics compared to both conventional value EVs and traditional ICE two-wheelers in the same price band.
This new launch builds on Ampere’s existing portfolio of affordable scooters, such as the award-winning Magnus Grand, recently recognised as the Electric Scooter of the Year 2026 in the under-Rs 1 lakh category. The company’s strategy appears to be a balanced one — maintaining strong presence in the value segment while preparing a more advanced, performance-oriented product to accelerate the shift from petrol to electric in the mass market.
By staying focused on scooters priced under Rs 1 lakh, Ampere (and parent Greaves Electric Mobility) is positioning itself to capture the next wave of EV adoption among everyday Indian consumers, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities where affordability and practicality matter most. With the new 6th-generation scooter on the horizon, Ampere is not just participating in the budget EV space — it is aiming to lead it and drive meaningful replacement of petrol scooters in India’s largest two-wheeler segment.
