Bengaluru Records Record-Breaking EV Registrations in a Single Day: Over 13,000 Electric Vehicles Registered.

Bengaluru, widely regarded as the EV capital of India, continues to lead the nation’s electric mobility revolution. The South Indian tech hub has long benefited from progressive EV-friendly policies, robust charging infrastructure, and strong consumer interest in sustainable transport. This momentum reached a dramatic peak on March 31, 2026, when over 13,000 new electric vehicles were registered across the city’s 11 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in a single day.

This extraordinary figure represents a staggering nearly 400% increase compared to the city’s average daily EV registrations in early 2026, which stood at around 267 vehicles per day. For context, daily EV registrations in Bengaluru were far lower in the previous year.

The primary catalyst for this last-minute rush was the implementation of the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which took effect on April 1, 2026. The new rules ended the previous blanket road tax exemption for electric vehicles (particularly cars) and introduced a graded lifetime tax structure:

  • EVs priced up to ₹10 lakh: 5% tax
  • EVs priced between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh: 8% tax
  • EVs above ₹25 lakh: 10% tax (no change from earlier luxury category)

Electric two-wheelers largely remained exempt from the new tax, but the change significantly impacted four-wheeler buyers. Many rushed to complete registrations before the deadline to avoid the additional one-time cost, which could add up to ₹1.6 lakh or more on a ₹20 lakh EV.

Beyond the tax deadline, broader factors are accelerating EV adoption in Bengaluru and across Karnataka:

  • Rising fuel costs — Persistent increases in petrol and diesel prices have made the operational economics of EVs far more attractive.
  • Global energy uncertainties — Geopolitical tensions and fluctuating crude oil markets have heightened awareness of energy security and long-term cost savings.
  • Strong underlying growth — Karnataka has seen robust EV momentum, with over 50,000 battery-operated vehicles registered statewide since the start of 2026. In March alone, nearly 25,000 pure EVs were registered across the state, with Bengaluru accounting for a significant share.

Bengaluru’s infrastructure advantages — extensive charging networks, supportive local policies, and a tech-savvy population — have positioned it as a frontrunner in India’s EV transition. The city’s daily average registrations in 2026 already showed healthy growth before the March spike, reflecting sustained consumer confidence in electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and passenger vehicles.

This single-day record not only highlights the sensitivity of the market to policy changes but also underscores the pent-up demand for cleaner, more affordable mobility solutions. While the new tax aims to generate additional revenue for the state, experts note it could temporarily moderate growth in the electric four-wheeler segment.

Despite the policy shift, Bengaluru’s EV story remains strong. The city and Karnataka continue to benefit from national trends, including record EV sales across India in FY26, driven by new models, improving battery technology, and increasing environmental awareness.

The March 31 surge serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly consumers respond to incentives — and the removal of them. As charging infrastructure expands and more affordable EV options enter the market, Bengaluru is likely to maintain its status as India’s electric vehicle powerhouse, even in a post-exemption era.
