Tesla has officially discontinued two of its pioneering electric vehicles, marking the close of a significant chapter in the company’s history. The Model S sedan and Model X SUV — long regarded as the brand’s flagship models — will no longer accept custom orders. Only a limited number of vehicles remain available from existing inventory.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CEO Elon Musk announced the development: “Custom orders of the Tesla Model S & X have come to an end. All that’s left are some in inventory.” He added that Tesla plans to hold a special ceremony to honour the end of this era and shared a nostalgic photo from the original Model S production launch at the Fremont factory 14 years ago, writing, “I love those cars.
”The decision was first signalled during Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings call in January 2026, when Musk described the move as giving the Model S and Model X an “honorable discharge.” Production at the Fremont plant in California is now winding down to make room for large-scale manufacturing of Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot. The company has set ambitious goals for Optimus, aiming for high-volume production in the coming years.
The Model S, which entered production in 2012, and the Model X, which followed in 2015, were both manufactured exclusively in the United States. These vehicles played a crucial role in establishing Tesla as a global leader in electric mobility. The Model S introduced the world to high-performance EVs with exceptional range and acceleration, while the Model X stood out with its innovative falcon-wing doors and spacious three-row layout.
However, in recent times, sales of both models have dropped sharply. As more affordable options like the Model 3 and Model Y gained popularity, and with increasing competition in the luxury EV space, the older flagships represented only a tiny portion of Tesla’s overall deliveries.
By repurposing the production lines at Fremont, Tesla is accelerating its strategic shift toward autonomy, robotaxis, and artificial intelligence. Musk has emphasised that the future lies in transportation-as-a-service and advanced robotics rather than traditional vehicle sales.Tesla has reassured current and future owners that full service, support, and spare parts will continue to be available for the Model S and Model X for many years ahead. Globally, only around 600 inventory units are estimated to remain.
This milestone represents the end of a 14-year journey for Tesla’s longest-running models. While it may feel bittersweet for loyal fans, it underscores the company’s bold pivot toward the next frontier of technology.
