Kia Seltos Hybrid Coming to India in 2027: Strong Hybrid Powertrain on the Cards

The mid-size SUV segment in India is heating up, and hybrid powertrains are becoming a serious game-changer. After confirming plans for a hybrid version of the Seltos, Kia India is set to bring the new Kia Seltos Hybrid to our shores next year — with a targeted launch in late 2026 or the first half of 2027.

This will be Kia’s second major hybrid offering in India (following another hybrid SUV expected earlier) and will directly challenge popular rivals like the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and the upcoming hybrid variants from other brands.

Unlike the global Seltos Hybrid (which uses a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission), the India-specific version will be adapted for better cost efficiency and localisation.

According to multiple reports, the Indian Seltos Hybrid will feature a small 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine — the same family of engine currently used in the standard Seltos. In its non-hybrid form, this engine produces 84.4 kW (113 hp) and 144 Nm of torque. An electric motor mounted on the front axle will assist the petrol engine, creating a strong hybrid system. This setup is expected to deliver significantly better fuel efficiency — potentially close to 25 kmpl in real-world mixed driving conditions — offering a 35-40% improvement over the standard petrol Seltos.

Kia is focusing heavily on localising hybrid components (battery, electric motor, and related systems) to keep pricing competitive in the highly price-sensitive Indian market.

  • e-AWD (electric All-Wheel Drive) is highly unlikely. Kia is expected to skip the e-AWD variant due to higher costs and limited demand in our market.
  • The full 1.6-litre hybrid powertrain seen in global models (including the 6-speed DCT setup) will not be offered here, primarily because that engine isn’t produced locally.

The hybrid system will remain front-wheel drive only, keeping complexity and pricing in check.

The current (and newly updated) Kia Seltos has been a strong performer with its 1.5L NA petrol, 1.5L turbo-petrol, and 1.5L diesel options. Adding a strong hybrid variant will give buyers a more efficient, smoother, and environmentally friendlier choice — especially for city commuting and highway runs where the electric motor can provide silent, instant torque assistance. With Kia aiming for 25% of its India sales to come from hybrids by 2030, the Seltos Hybrid will play a key role in this strategy. It will sit in the popular mid-size SUV space (roughly ₹18–25 lakh range, estimated) and offer buyers a compelling alternative to pure petrol/diesel models without jumping straight into full EVs.

The Seltos Hybrid is a smart move by Kia. By basing it on the proven and localised 1.5-litre engine + electric motor combo, the company can deliver meaningful fuel savings and refinement while keeping the price accessible. It won’t be the most powerful hybrid in the segment, but it should offer excellent real-world efficiency and low running costs — exactly what many Indian buyers are looking for in 2027.

We expect more details on combined power output, battery size, exact mileage figures, and variant-wise pricing to emerge closer to launch. In the meantime, the upcoming Seltos Hybrid looks set to strengthen Kia’s position in the fiercely competitive mid-size SUV market.
