India’s Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Surge to New Monthly Record in March 2026

The Indian electric two-wheeler (E2W) segment has delivered a stellar performance in March 2026, with sales already crossing the previous year’s entire monthly figure well before the month ended.

According to the latest available sales data till March 27, 2026, electric two-wheeler retail volumes have surpassed 1.39 lakh units. This marks a significant jump compared to 1.31 lakh units sold during the whole of March 2025. With four days still remaining in the month, the industry is on track to register its highest-ever monthly sales, potentially breaching the previous record of 1.45 lakh units set in October 2025.This robust growth comes despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in and around West Asia, which have created uncertainty in global markets and supply chains. The strong year-on-year (YoY) performance — expected to be in double digits — highlights the resilience of India’s electric two-wheeler segment and the growing consumer preference for electric mobility.

The momentum in March reflects the healthy growth seen throughout the fiscal year. Electric two-wheeler sales in FY2026 (April 2025–March 2026) have already reached approximately 13.5 lakh units, registering a 17% year-on-year growth compared to 11.5 lakh units in FY2025. This uptick has been driven by network expansion by major players, frequent new model launches, attractive financing schemes, and increasing awareness about the lower running costs of electric scooters.

Legacy two-wheeler manufacturers such as TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto have strengthened their grip on the segment, while other players continue to innovate with feature-rich and affordable offerings.

Several factors are contributing to this record-breaking month:

  • Year-end Push: Manufacturers are offering aggressive discounts, exchange bonuses, and festive-like schemes to clear inventory and meet annual targets.
  • Improved Product Line-up: Better range, faster charging, and stylish designs are making electric scooters more appealing to family buyers and daily commuters.
  • Policy Support & Infrastructure: Continued state-level incentives and the gradual expansion of charging networks are boosting buyer confidence.
  • Rising Fuel Prices: Sustained high petrol prices are making the total cost of ownership of electric two-wheelers far more attractive.

If the current sales pace continues, March 2026 is almost certain to become the new benchmark for monthly electric two-wheeler sales in India. This performance sets a strong foundation as the industry enters FY2027, even as the central government’s PM E-DRIVE scheme for electric two-wheelers nears its conclusion.

The consistent double-digit growth signals that electric two-wheelers are no longer a niche segment but are rapidly becoming mainstream in urban and semi-urban India.

With new models, better battery technology, and increasing competition, the electric two-wheeler industry is poised for even stronger growth in the coming months.
