Honda Cars India has kicked off an extensive pan-India road testing programme for its highly anticipated first electric SUV, the Honda 0 α (Zero Alpha). This marks a crucial milestone in the Japanese automaker’s electrification journey in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets, as the company prepares to introduce its maiden battery-electric vehicle tailored for Indian buyers.
The testing phase was officially flagged off on March 16, 2026, from Honda’s manufacturing facility in Tapukara, Rajasthan. A camouflaged prototype of the Honda 0 α began its real-world validation runs, embarking on a nationwide public road verification programme. Over the coming months, Honda engineers will rigorously evaluate the SUV across diverse Indian conditions—including bustling urban traffic, high-speed highways, rough rural roads, extreme heat, monsoon challenges, and varying altitudes—to ensure durability, performance, charging efficiency, and overall usability in local scenarios.
Unveiled as a concept at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the Honda 0 α is positioned as a “gateway” model in Honda’s new 0 Series lineup of born-electric vehicles. It embodies the brand’s “Thin, Light, and Wise” philosophy, focusing on sleek, efficient design with maximized interior space in a compact footprint—ideal for India’s crowded cities and family needs.Key highlights from the concept stage include:
- Futuristic, aerodynamic styling with a spacious cabin
- Advanced EV architecture promising strong efficiency
- Targeted real-world range exceeding 500 km on a single charge (based on global estimates)
- Potential for fast-charging capabilities and multiple battery options
The 0 α will replace earlier plans for an electric version of the Elevate and is expected to compete directly in the premium compact-to-mid-size electric SUV segment against rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6, and others.
Unlike the larger Honda 0 SUV (part of the 0 Series), which is slated for import as a CBU in some markets, the 0 α will be produced locally at Honda’s Tapukara plant. This Made-in-India approach aims to keep pricing competitive while enabling exports to markets like Japan and beyond. The production-spec version is expected to launch in India sometime next year (likely in 2027, aligning with global timelines for the model). It will serve as Honda’s first all-electric passenger vehicle for the domestic market, helping the brand catch up in the rapidly evolving EV space.
Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, emphasized the significance: “The start of pan-India public road verification testing is a key milestone in our electrification journey. These trials will help us fine-tune the vehicle to perfectly suit Indian customer expectations and road conditions.
”As India pushes toward greater EV adoption with improving infrastructure and incentives, the Honda 0 α’s testing phase signals serious intent from the brand. With local manufacturing, strong range credentials, and Honda’s renowned reliability, this electric SUV could become a strong contender in the segment when it arrives.
