The Ferrari 849 Testarossa has made its highly anticipated debut in India, marking a significant milestone as Ferrari’s first global launch event held in the country. Unveiled on March 14, 2026, in Mumbai by Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna, this plug-in hybrid supercar revives one of the most iconic names in automotive history while pushing the boundaries of modern performance.
The original Testarossa, a legendary 1980s icon known for its wide stance, side strakes, and flat-12 engine, inspired generations of enthusiasts. The new 849 Testarossa draws on that heritage—evoking the spirit of earlier racing legends like the 1950s 250 Testa Rossa—while embracing cutting-edge hybrid technology. The “849” designation nods to its V8 architecture (8 cylinders) and 49 cc per cylinder displacement.
This flagship model serves as the direct successor to the SF90 Stradale, sharing its core plug-in hybrid architecture but featuring substantial enhancements in power, aerodynamics, chassis dynamics, and design. Ferrari describes it as the “boldest” and most powerful production car in its history.
At the heart of the 849 Testarossa lies a re-engineered 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine (F154FC code), now producing around 819–830 hp on its own—an increase over the SF90’s unit thanks to updated internals, larger turbos, and improved efficiency. This is paired with three electric motors: two at the front axle for torque vectoring and all-wheel drive, and one rear unit (MGU-K style, inspired by Formula 1 tech) integrated with the transmission. The combined system output reaches 1,035–1,050 hp (sources vary slightly between 1,035 hp and 1,050 cv/PS, equivalent to approximately 1,036–1,050 hp) and substantial torque around 621 lb-ft from the ICE alone, with electric boost adding seamless delivery.Performance figures are breathtaking:
- 0-100 km/h acceleration in 2.2–2.3 seconds (under 2.3 seconds officially claimed).
- Top speed of over 330 km/h (approximately 205 mph).
- Enhanced downforce—up to around 415–450 kg at high speeds—with active aerodynamics, including a redesigned active rear spoiler drawing from racing solutions.
- The car benefits from a refined hybrid system with a small ~7–8 kWh battery, enabling short electric-only driving (around 15–25 km range) for silent urban starts or low-speed cruising.
Ferrari emphasizes that the setup delivers not just raw speed but exceptional drivability, with seamless transitions between electric and combustion power, improved handling in varied conditions (even rain), and a more engaging, analog-feeling experience despite the digital aids.
Externally, the 849 Testarossa features a bold, aggressive redesign that sets it apart from the SF90. It incorporates historical cues—like side strakes and a dramatic presence—blended with contemporary elements such as sharper lines, advanced active aero, and optimized thermal management. The interior receives updates for better ergonomics, materials, and driver-focused interfaces.
An optional Assetto Fiorano package further boosts dynamics with lightweight components and enhanced aero. A Spider (convertible) variant is also available, featuring a retractable hardtop that operates in seconds.
The Mumbai event underscores Ferrari’s growing focus on the Indian market, with strengthened dealer support and localized initiatives. Pricing in India starts around ₹10 crore (approximately $1.2 million USD equivalent, ex-showroom), reflecting import duties and positioning it as an ultra-exclusive hypercar. This launch highlights India’s rising status in the global luxury automotive scene.
The Ferrari 849 Testarossa blends legendary heritage with future-forward hybrid performance, proving that even in an electrified era, the Prancing Horse can deliver visceral thrills. For collectors and driving purists, it’s a modern masterpiece that honors its past while charging toward tomorrow.
