The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) hosted the fifth edition of the Global Electrification Mobility Summit on February 10, 2026, highlighting strategies to accelerate electric vehicle adoption in India through stronger policy coordination, infrastructure expansion, and deeper industry collaboration.
The summit brought together government officials, industry leaders, and mobility experts to discuss the future of electrification and the steps needed to scale sustainable transportation across the country.
EV Sales Cross Two Million Units
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister of Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy revealed that electric vehicle sales in India crossed the two-million-unit mark in fiscal year 2025. He also announced the government’s ambitious plan to install 70,000 public charging stations nationwide to support the growing EV ecosystem.
Kumaraswamy emphasized that India’s automotive sector is among the fastest-growing in the world and is well positioned to set global benchmarks. He added that as India progresses toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy, the mobility sector will play a crucial role in driving sustainable growth.
Focus on E-Bus Adoption
A major highlight of the summit was the launch of SIAM’s whitepaper titled “Roadmap for Accelerated Adoption of E-Buses in India” during a ministerial session. The document outlines policy measures, financing models, and infrastructure strategies to boost electric bus deployment across urban and intercity transport networks.
The whitepaper aims to support state transport undertakings and private operators in transitioning to cleaner public transportation systems.
Policy Continuity Driving Growth
Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, shared that EV sales recorded a 25 percent growth, underlining the effectiveness of consistent government policies. He attributed the strong performance to policy continuity and the implementation of the PM E-Drive initiative, which has played a key role in encouraging electric mobility adoption.
According to Dr. Qureshi, sustained government support and clear regulatory frameworks have helped build confidence among manufacturers, investors, and consumers.
Strengthening Industry Collaboration
The summit also highlighted the importance of collaboration between policymakers, automakers, infrastructure providers, and technology firms. Discussions focused on improving charging infrastructure, enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities, and strengthening supply chains for batteries and critical components.
SIAM reiterated its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to ensure that India’s EV transition remains inclusive, efficient, and globally competitive.
Looking Ahead
With EV sales rising steadily and large-scale infrastructure projects underway, India’s electrification journey is entering a critical phase. Events such as the Global Electrification Mobility Summit provide a platform for aligning policy objectives with industry capabilities.
As the country moves toward its economic and sustainability goals, coordinated efforts across government and industry are expected to play a defining role in shaping the future of mobility in India.
