Hero MotoCorp’s electric vehicle arm, Vida, is gearing up to expand beyond its current lineup of electric scooters into the electric motorcycle segment. A significant step in this direction is the recent patent filing in India for the Vida Ubex, marking the company’s first patented electric motorcycle design targeted at the domestic market.
Positioned as an urban-focused electric bike, the Ubex is designed for city riding, emphasizing agility, practicality, and style in congested environments. The patent images reveal a near-production-ready version that has evolved significantly from its initial concept stage, adopting a streetfighter-style or naked street bike aesthetic with aggressive lines, a sporty stance, and modern elements suited for everyday commuting.
The Ubex first appeared as one of several concepts showcased by Vida at EICMA 2025 in Milan, Italy. At the event, Vida presented an ambitious array of electric mobility ideas, including multiple motorcycle-oriented concepts. Alongside the Ubex, the lineup featured the VXZ (a more production-oriented street-naked electric motorcycle developed in collaboration with Zero Motorcycles), the Dirt.E series (including off-road and kids’ models), and the NEX family (which included innovative micro-mobility solutions like a compact electric vehicle with gullwing doors, portable scooters, and leaning trikes). While the NEX concepts leaned toward compact urban mobility and even microcars, the Ubex, VXZ, and Dirt.E entries highlighted Vida’s push into full-fledged electric motorcycles.
The Ubex stood out at EICMA as a supermoto-inspired or crossover-style concept—often described as an “urban explorer”—with features like a prominent beak, two-tone color scheme (including a white frame and bold red panels in the concept), a slim tail section, upside-down (USD) forks, and a mid-mounted electric motor setup. It blended elements of naked street bikes with light adventure traits, evoking comparisons to electrified supermotos like a hypothetical electric Ducati Hypermotard, but tailored for practical city use.
The recent Indian design patent suggests that the Ubex has transitioned from a pure showpiece to a model approaching production. Unlike the concept’s more radical styling, the patented version appears refined for real-world manufacturing, likely retaining commuter-friendly ergonomics such as an upright riding position. This move aligns with Hero MotoCorp’s broader strategy to strengthen Vida’s portfolio in India’s growing electric two-wheeler market, where competitors are also advancing into electric motorcycles (e.g., Royal Enfield’s Flying Flea and others). While specific technical details like battery capacity, range, power output, or exact launch timeline remain undisclosed, the patent filing indicates accelerated development. It positions the Ubex as a potential entry-level or mid-segment electric motorcycle under Vida, complementing premium efforts like the VXZ (which has also seen patent activity and Zero collaboration). With this patent, Vida is signaling serious intent to capture the electric motorcycle space in India and potentially beyond. As urban riders increasingly seek silent, efficient, and exciting alternatives to traditional ICE bikes, the Ubex could play a key role in Hero’s EV ambitions, building on Vida’s established scooter success to deliver a more dynamic riding experience. Enthusiasts will be watching closely for official specifications, pricing, and a confirmed debut in the coming months.
